Microsoft details its Windows 8 upgrade plans

When we talk about business money matters.

Taking their advice for those users that did not install W8 RP will get into trouble but on their hand it is their income. Users forced to buy Microsoft Surface if can't handle the troubleshoot, or do not have a choice to be able to repair or to figure out the problem.

A Guy

Hi there
I really can't imagine ANY business having more than about 5 computers ever even THINKING of installing or upgrading to W8 from whatever system.

Take a HUGE organisation like SHELL-- still going from XP to W7 and they certainly aren't going to attempt another project like that for YEARS again if EVER --.

In a few years time these organsations realize it's probably easier and more efficient for people to bring their OWN gear in and connect via company VPN's for running work software -- OK security implications etc have to be overcome but the sheer time and expense this particular organisation spent on this particular upgrade has convinced the CEO's that they will never ever want to do this sort of stuff again if they can possibly avoid it.

Just imagine USER training for people in this size organsation for using W8 -- just go over to the W8 Forum --even seasoned geeks were a bit fazed with the navigation system in W8 -- try teaching this to basic clerical / HR staff etc. --forget it. the time and cost is just too prohibitive.

So Dear Ms don't expect W8 EVER to be seen inside a large workplace. It just 'AINT' going to happen. NEVER EVER.

I'll bet even in YOUR OWN corporation you've still got some servers running Windows NT / Windows 2000 and certainly W2003 Server.

So Ms when are YOUR OWN plans for upgrading YOUR systems to W8. It will make incredibly interesting reading and also you could publish the pitfalls and user training procedures etc.

W8 currently with the wretched Metro is totally INAPPROPRIATE for typical businesses. It's OK maybe for some consumers who like the "Kiddies Menu screen" so it looks and feels like a smart phone but this doesn't work for lots of business users.

Cheers

Now that's the voice of reason and common sense.

Off Topic: Thought this joke might appeal to your British sense of humor Jimbo. It's set in the mid 1900s in an English criminal court room:

Judge: What's the next case?

Clerk of court: The next defendant is accused of pickpocketing, m'lud.

Judge: How do you plead?

Defendant: Guilty m'lud!

Judge: Fined ten quid!

Defendant: I've only got a fiver m'lud!

Judge: Put him back in the crowd until he gets another fiver! :)

Hi there
Love it

I'm not British BTW although I have worked contracts in London, Swansea (Not DVLA !!), Manchester --loved it there, and York -- also a great place.

London (IMO) -- overrated - expensive and travelling anywhere by ANY form of transport -- a total nightmare --at weekend's half the tube lines are down due to "Engineering" -- can't they build stuff properly in the first place --suppose not as all the London Jobs are based on The Stock Exchange and horrible Banks while Real jobs are outsourced elsewhere) and almost anything you want -- even buying a simple single journey train ticket involves standing in endless queues that make the old Soviet system seem like an express system. Even finding people who can speak English isn't that simple either in the central areas. !!!

Most of the UK is fine --just avoid London IMO.

I got also to like Cricket and am following the England V Aus one day series with interest.

Glad you enjoyed the joke. Not everyone would get the "m'lud" bit. And nice to see another cricket fan on this forum. It's a great game once you get to know it.

Totally endorse your comments re London. To be avoided at all costs. No offence intended to any Londoners!

Apologies about the nationality mix up. Should have looked more closely at national flag being Iceland!

Cheers PB :D

So Win 8 is for businesses and corporations also. Well, if Metro fails, then we'll have to wait for SP1 with start menu again.
And (maybe) all goes well.

Well Ms might think so but I can't pin down ONE SINGLE BUSINESS who would even THINK of embarking on that type of foolhardy upgrade especially now when money is tight and growth dubious at best for at least the next 6 to 9 months or so-- just imagine the sheer time and expense of trying to explain to basic "Bog standard" users how to navigate and use W8.

As I said before -- until the standard Desktop boots up from the logon --for businesses any W8 upgrade "JUST AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN"

and any of these overpaid and overblown consultancies such as "Acc---ure" or "Inf---s" should know better than charging exhorbitant rates for something that's doomed to failure even before their "suited and booted ipad wielding staff" open their first flip chart.

It even sounds like a joke. There are risks involved: after some bad user experience (if it's gonna turn this bad...), many won't even look at Win8 sp1 and go back to Win7 (not even talking about businesses here anymore).
