Hey, Windows 8 doesn't suck

padd-tablet-ipad-surface_imgur_610x269.jpg

For months now, various pundits have been deriding the upcoming Windows 8 as the next Vista. People have made mocking videos showing older people thoroughly confused by Windows 8's Metro tile interface. Indeed, the Windows 8 Metro interface is radically different than the traditional Windows desktop. It's a touch interface.

Yet the same pundits that slammed Windows 8 on the desktop are now lauding Microsoft Surface, the Windows 8-powered touch tablet that Microsoft announced Monday. Since the Windows 8 Metro software hasn't changed, what exactly is so different? After all, Microsoft is demonstrating the exact same interface on touch-enabled hardware. And all of a sudden, Windows 8 is making sense.

On a Tablet it may makes sense, but on a Desktop it still sucks. Metro needs decent mouse controls to be any use on the desktop. Having to pretend the mouse is a hand, for example to close apps by sweeping your pretend hand from the top of the screen to the bottom is just silly and slow. Almost all Windows users are using either Desktops or Laptops without touch screens. There are very few Windows tablets. Any sold after Windows 8 comes out will only be a small percentage of the total number of Windows systems. To make all those people buying new computers pretend they have tablets does "Suck". Hopefully OEM Manufacturers will still offer windows 7 as a option.

Yeah I don't get it. I mean seriously, how anyone can NOT see that on a tablet metro is fine and on a desktop it's horrible. Exact same interface, yes, fine there, horrible here. It makes perfect sense and I have to wonder about the reasoning skills of any pundit that doesn't "get" that.

But then again, I DO realise that there are a lot of people out there that never used their computer for /anything/ more than what you can do on a tablet. Light mail, you-tubing, twitter and that's it. And in those cases there may not be any difference.

But surely anyone that claims to have any experience or authority in the tech industry can see that as soon as you start actually using a desktop AS a desktop that Metro just falls flat on it's face.

And no... all devices will NOT be touch devices. At this point I can only assume that nearly every single tech writer is on crack. But I guess that's what it takes to sell articles these days :/

Keep in mind that the majority of people in this forum presumably made up of enthusiasts think the Start Menu and desktop are fine as the primary program organizer, enable the redundant Quick Launch in Windows 7, and at least one has stated he hates the taskbar's pinning capabilities, jump lists, and so forth. Half my posts here have been about these puzzling things, and I've concluded that most people are clueless about using their computers effectively. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe as you suggest, they don't use their computers for very many different things, and the interface really doesn't matter that much to them. That's why they get bored and are interested in shiny new things just because they're shiny and new, which are actual admissions by at least one poster here. They don't notice that Windows HE sucks because their usage patterns are so far below the threshold of noticing it. Anything and everything works for them. As I've been told multiple times, nothing is better or worse than anything else, just different.

I call BS. In a few years, most consumers will be on touchscreen laptops and tablets. MS is doing the right thing and staying ahead of the curve and building for the future. How stale would MS be if they kept the same old desktop and aero interface that reminds everyone of Vista? All they would hear about is how MS isnt innovating and hows it's not much dif than Win7.

The mobile device market is not yet saturated and is set to grow at a much faster rate than desktop/laptops.

MS want to get a piece of that action.

Makes sense for them to release a tablet o/s.

That is what they have done.

They are not releasing a new o/s which is suitable for desktop/laptop use.

the company should... let people automatically bypass it on the Windows desktop. Why force a touch interface on non-touch computers?

Even if/when most pc's come with touchscreens - it will be just another input method. For a lot of things, touchscreens are no use.

Even if someone were to give me a touch screen I am in no hurry to spend my day reaching across my desk to use it. Having a touch interface is nice if the device is in your lap or held in your hand but hardly practical on a desktop PC, not for me anyway. The whole point of having a big monitor is so its not in my face. IMHO Metro sucks on a desktop PC, or even a standard laptop for that matter. I'm not interested in having 100+ shortcuts pined to my taskbar either. Just because it works for one person doesn't mean we all want to go that route no matter how good you try to make it sound.

On desktop it REALLY SUCKS, I have it installed in a VBox machine and am forcing myself to toy around with it at least 2 or 3 hours a week. It IS awful. The interface I mean, it sucks,

^ I virtualize everything. I found that the experience with Metro and Windows 8 in a virtualized environment made it even more awful.

Once I installed on a physical machine things were much better. The corners and such work much better.

Most detractors, myself included, state that win8, METRO sucks mightily on the desktop. And it straight out does, and nothing will change that. I'll go one step further, I think metro apps suck too.

Metro apps on a desktop are just strange. I don't see the value at all. Why dedicated 100% of my entire screen to a music application. I would expect 90% of my work under Windows 8 on a desktop/laptop to be done under the desktop.

Brink, I like the way you introduce a subject! Great article! Good writer. Nailed it! Not complicated!

Sci-fi predicts it, Gates tries to introduce it and fails, Jobs trendies it and succeeds, Ballmer tries to market it again!

Discovering the secret to well-designed products
Apple certainly led the way in bringing well-designed, easy-to-use products to the market, and now others are beginning to get a clue. It's actually not that complicated. Hire reputable industrial designers, then listen to them. And then test the resulting products extensively and fix whatever annoys people. This same process has been applied to cars, kitchen appliances, and other consumer categories at companies run by MBAs, not Steve Jobs.

M$ is in the business of marketing software. They foresee the trend of touch. OEMs aren't doing the job on hardware, so they will introduce the Surface along with Win 8. I predict it will be a smash hit.

I'm old enough to remember opening cans with a hand-held human-powered can opener. Then we purchased an electric one. I remember pinning diapers as a sitter and dunking them into a toilet to 1st rinse them for the wash. Then they came out with disposables. I raised my kids with them. I HATE the mouse! I'm getting a touch device. I hope you get my jest....

I, myself, am very much liking 8. If one doesn't like 8, stick with 7. I think the author's correct about 9.

In closing, the only thing constant in the universe is change.

Microsoft didn't even start their tablet obsession with xp, they started it back way yonder around Windows 3 with an edition called Windows 3 for Pen Computing! The main reason I suspect that people claim that Microsoft stole apple's idea is because there simple aren't Windows Tablet PCs out in consumer existence. The thing different now is that Microsoft is emphasizing touch and mobility like never before. Windows 7 was built for both, but didn't have a touchier interface. Windows 8 does and is being considered a serious threat to the ipad like no other and has pretty much ended android.

Great graphic! I hadn't seen that one yet! I had heard that Samsung defended an intellectual property suit in the EU brought by apple (who claimed they had patented a thin touch screen device that you tap, etc). Samsung pointed out the PADD in TNG and called it prior art. Just beautiful! LOL.
