Did MS just kill the Windows oem market ?

the core Windows 8 looks to be a rockin’ OS, but layered with awkward Metro weirdness...

...a big middle finger pointed straight at the likes of Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and all the other nice little companies who’ve — you know — paid Microsoft’s freight all these long years.

Quite honestly, this is as baffling as New Coke was to Coca Cola consumers worldwide.

I do wonder whether they can sustain shooting themselves in the foot too many times before we wind up in a self-inflicted post-PC world.

It does seem like they are deliberately trying to kill the Desktop PC.

A conspiracy theorist might say that the Corporations and Governments, have got tired of the peasants not following orders.

I dunno. Consider Intel. They make motherboards. They also make chipsets used by other manufacturers to make motherboards. Most finished Intel-chipset motherboards aren't sold by Intel. Whether this business model could be extended to operating systems and tablets, I can only guess.

If you recall 3dfx (3D graphics chip maker), they committed unintentional suicide by choosing to make and sell finished products directly, while cutting off all supplies to their former manufacturing partners. I presume that Microsoft will avoid doing anything that dire.

Could it just be that Microsoft is showing the OEM'S that they are willing to bet the farm with Windows 8 powered tablets. It could also be that MS is showing the developers that they are going to stand behind this whole thing as well. Maybe some people were getting nervous about the whole Windows 8 thing, who knows.

I'm hoping that the OEM'S are going to get behind this thing in a big way, I'd like to see the type of innovation that Asus, Samsung and others can bring to these things. All kinds of hybrids and sizes till the market figures out what it wants. I find this a lot more pleasing than Apples one size fits all approach, this is why Microsoft dominated in the first place.

I think those who understand a little about the business world will get it.

This is very bad news for oem's. It damages their relationship with MS. It forces them to readjust their plans.

They must have already been concerned win8 was a gamble for everyone - they may now be thinking about scaling back production even more and possible further job losses.

If there was a viable alternative o/s - they would be moving to it in droves.

There was a little fanciful suggestion by Mike saying if Jobsy was alive - he would be tempted to take the desktop market away from MS.

When he posted that whimsy - he didn't know MS was going to do this.

If anyone was in a position to attack - now is the time. MS have left themselves wide open.

Probably because they believe there is no competition.

I really think you're on the wrong track SIW2, I don't think MS is trying to upset the OEM's, I think they're trying to show them the way.
You said they believe there is no competition, well I think Steve Balmer wakes up everyday watching the world close in around him. They know they're in trouble, and Windows 8 is the way out of it, I think the OEM's were nervous, and this is showing them they'll put their money where their mouth is.
Why would Microsoft do anything now to upset the OEM's when some of them have already shown off their Windows 8 offerings, I might be totally off track but I don't think so.

It's not MS killing the desktop PC, it's the consumers who are buying tablets left and right that are killing the desktop PC. These companies don't dictate what we have, it's the consumers who make the decision to either buy or NOT buy their product. I read an article recently on the new Mac Book with retina display and that thing is so locked down and practically unrepairable...but it's what the consumers want. They voted for that slim and locked down approach when they bought more and more Mac Book Air's than they did Mac Book Pro's. People are more attracted to shiny, cool, and slim then they are functionality, and longevity of life.

I'm hoping that the OEM'S are going to get behind this thing in a big way, I'd like to see the type of innovation that Asus, Samsung and others can bring to these things. But I don't necessarily want what we have in the Android space either. We have so many tablets and so many sizes, and some apps which work on tablets 1,2 and 3, but not on tablets 4,5,6. Some tablets that work with OS release 1, but only on the Samsung and Acer hardware, but not yet on the Asus hardware. This I believe is really where Apple has made a killing is that everything is consistent and everybody has the same things and expectations are the same. Apps can be developed more easily because they know EXACTLY what everybody has. No decisions have to be made or compromises because somebody has system 1 and somebody else has system 2.

You are imagining things that were not in my post.

MS are not trying to upset the oem's.

It is an unfortunate consequence of making their own hardware.

There is no other viable o/s for the oem's to ship at the moment - they have to use Windows. There is no competing product they can use.

Therefore MS went ahead - even tho. it would upset the oem's - because the oem's have nowhere else to go.

When I'm talking about Asus and Samsung I wasn't talking about Android I was talking about Windows 8 and RT. The problem with Apple is you're living in a walled garden, I don't want that. As nice as the iPad is, it's not really what I want. I can guarantee you, when MS makes a tablet at a reasonable price and quality, a lot of people will be dumping their iPads. Especially students and business people.

Indeed. The half million apps in Apple's app store are just like a half million prison bars, audio components that support Airplay are like shackles, and on and on. The misery never stops.

OTOH, Windows HE, among other things, put a hip-hop "artist" right in my face the first time I opened its Music app, along with a dozen other ads. They're always lurking to the right and at least partly visible. I don't even have to explicitly navigate to a "store", as I do in iTunes; instead, Microsoft has given its ads equal billing with my stuff, putting everything on one seamless, infinitely scrolling roll. There's no menu bar where I can look for "Settings", and right-clicking does nothing, because the things I've learned over 20 years no longer apply, but after a while, I stumble upon the hidden upper-right corner one-pixel hotspot and choose "Settings" there (no small feat when using a VM or multiple monitors), and I find "Preferences". But when I select it, Microsoft merely tells me, "This app plays music from your Music Library", and there are no options to select, in particular, no way to get rid of the ads and make Microsoft's Music app do what Microsoft is telling me it does. I tell you, I've never felt so free.

As nice as the iPad is, it's not really what I want. I can guarantee you, when MS makes a tablet at a reasonable price and quality, a lot of people will be dumping their iPads. Especially students and business people.

Indeed. Just like the Zune killed the iPod, Microsoft's tablet will take over the mobile market.

What's actually happening is that people who buy one Apple product are buying more Apple products. No one whose last name isn't "Windows" is dying to "dump their iPad" and replace it with a Microsoft product. I can guarantee you.

Half a million Apps, all the top Apps are kiddies games, most of Apples own Apps are rubbish, read the comments on them. Out of 500,000 Apps you'd be lucky to find 100 good ones. I quite like my iPad 3 but it's not magical and I can do more on my Acer a500, 'but out of the two I prefer the iPad, mainly because it's got a faster web browser. Also I get crashes at least 5 times per day on my iPad 3, virtually none on my Acer Android. It doesn't just work.

I run Windows 8 on a Netbook and on two PCs, two netbooks on XP and two PCs on Windows 7, I'm a fanboy of Tech not any particular OS, but I like Windows the best.

So, I have a question. It seems some of your gripes about Windows 8 seem to be about a superfluously redesigned UI that threw out a lot of what you knew, about 20 years or so. Do you happen have a smartphone of any kind?

Also, a word about the Music app, that's an interim crap app just to give a taste. It will be Xbox Music by the end of the road. It functions somewhat like the Music app, but more polished. Though, I REALLY do not want to see justin beiber or adele album covers. I don't have their music! It's right now a stripped down version of what's to come.

Yes, for people have at least 3,000 dollars to set on fire for apple products, a top of the line macbook at 2,000 dollars, a giant itouch for the poor of sight for 500 dollars, and a phone that is a mini ipad with a phone for at least 200 dollars along with contract costs.

Please.....

People aren't made out of money. Once the realization sets in that something new has come to the block that does more than a 500 dollar ipad is capable of, simple deduction and economics falls into place.
