Windows 8 Secrets: New Desktop Theme

With tech enthusiast web sites from around the world continuing to leak Windows 8 information in the wake of the Release Preview, your intrepid “Windows 8 Secrets” co-authors offer a bit of color commentary about what you’re seeing and how these features will really work. In this new co-post, we look briefly at leaked images of the upcoming new desktop theme in Windows 8.

This week, Winunleaked posted a number of tiringly similar screenshots that depict the coming Windows 8 desktop theme that will replace Aero. As Microsoft previously promised last month in a mammoth Building Windows 8 blog post, the company decided to remove the Aero “glass and reflections” and “take some ideas from [their] new [Metro] design language and apply them where [they] could.” So the new theme features squared off window edges, new default white window chrome, and a less translucent taskbar.

It's definitely uglier than CP or RP version.

And why not make it fully white?
If everything is white then a transparent taskbar looks like crap. There is no balance of colors.

Especially since they've basically removed all of the "Legacy" customisation options.

Ghod, they are playskooling the desktop as well. That is just plain fugly. THe entire OS is going to look like it was designed as a high school project.

Someone must has told them that if they couldn;t draw a background or button or widget graphic using MS Paint then it wouldn't be accepted in the new UI :(

Now all that would be ok if they would just make it so that the OS could easily be themed. But it's so dicey trying to theme windows, it just barely works if your lucky and it completely hoses your system if your not :( I'm always sorry I tried it and vista and 7 looked so good I no longer felt the need to. Now...

I just don't understand, what is the microsoft's profit on forcing people to use their deisgn? Okay, I like the Metro UI, but there's just one thing i like even more: Personalizing my own workspace. Computer isn't just a fun media/ gaming machine, that's main purpose is to just hypnotise the user. The main purpose is to be a computer, a device to create things and work. It's like a office desk, you work on it, but you want to keep it clean and make it look like yourself, make it look a nice work space for you. I still don't understand the fact that microsoft has to delete old things and replace it with something new, why do they have to replace Aero with Metro-Desktop? Why do they have to make people to do what they don't want you to do: Hack these customization things.

The fact is, that microsoft makes everything to look nice, and sharp for thew commercials and marketing. Why they don't just put some presets, and somewhere in the corner the old things that we liked? Anyway, microsoft isn't going to get profit with this. The main reason people upgraded to 7 was mainly that their O/S is getting obsolete. Just asking: What did come with windows 8 that wasn't omplemented in 7? what makes me to buy 8 when I have 7? I'm not going to buy this os just for Metro UI, I don't hate it, but I'm not going to spend 120€ on Windows 8 just for Usb 3.0, Metro UI and built in ISO mounter.

But anyway Microsoft, The consumers are not stupid.

I love the "not that ugly" comments. If that's the best one can say about the new desktop graphics, that says a LOT.

All these completely squared off edges and zero shading, completely flat colored squares, all white backgrounds etc are quite tiring to look at. Everything looks the same. The calendar app is the biggest mass of irritating squares imaginable. They should really rename Windows to Squares. :)
