Just days after Microsoft released its latest operating system, hackers have begun targeting soon-to-be Windows 10 users with an emerging kind of malware.

Cisco security researchers are warning users against opening email attachments purporting to be from the software giant. The "ransomware" malware, which encrypts files until a ransom is paid, is being sent as part of an email spam campaign.

In a blog post, Cisco researcher Nick Biasini said the attackers are "impersonating Microsoft in an attempt to exploit their user base for monetary gain."

The emails claims its attachment includes an installer that allows users to get the new operating system sooner.

Will or have been hackers ever caught and prosecuted?

I pretty much watch what I'm doing online. Getting hammered with a trojan (first & last) and a dialer (first & last)(Win98), will teach one pretty fast about what you click on. As for an email from Microsoft? I mark that kind of crap as spam (Mail Washer Pro). I can look at said email in Mail Washer and nothing will happen, unless you click the "View in HTML". Things could get pretty nasty on a short trip.

Besides, I requested the update. Which means it will download from the Windows servers. Not someone else's malware site.

It's basically a matter of due diligence and paying attention to things, including e-mail addresses. If an e-mail address reads Microsoft.abc.com then you should be suspicious because the address makes no sense, and any files attached to such an e-mail should not be opened. Simply delete the e-mail and go about your business. Problem is a lot of people don't pay attention to these things and just click anything.

Awareness is key to stopping these things - Situation Awareness.

My two cents.
