Eighteen years ago, I fell in love with Norton Anti-virus, and I hated its evil arch-enemy, MacAfee. But Norton started putting entries on your computer that would sabotage other AV programs if you switched.

Six years ago, I switched to free AV programs and I've never regretted it.

But then the free ones started forcing themselves to start-up all the time, even though I only wanted one of them to be running. So now I just stick with Windows Defender, and I'm not having any problems.

Symantec has released the first 2013 public betas of Norton Antivirus,Norton Internet Security and Norton 360.

Ugh!!! I wouldn't install that bunch of ---pware on a PC even if YOU PAID me. !!!!

Cheers

Man do I ever agree with that statement.

Norton turns your Windows machine into a Norton Op system, taking over your entire system for the sake of security is ridiculous.

Hey GMan, yes I did. But that hasn't been identified yet with Norton. That shutdown procedure came from Window 8 forum and was an answer to a shutdown problem as described. Don't forget the defrag issue I posted also. I promise that when my subscription runs out, I'll see if I the problem disappears and make a full disclosure statement!

How many times did I say it was Norton already? About 8-10?

Hello GMan,
I know that you have made this point often. But never having this problem ever in XP or in Windows 7 Ultimate, I took it with a bit of skepticism as maybe you might be mistaken and are obviously anti Norton. Finding that Microsoft Windows 8 forum mentions the shutdown problem and a fix for it without mentioning any 3rd party software being the cause also caused some doubt. Having looked at the link you provided and I will read it further, it does add credence to your confident diagnosis. But again from personal experience it never happened until Window 8 CP. Since I use it with complete confidence on W7 and it is, in actuality, the cause of the shutdown hangups with W8CP, I still feel it is worth it, especially since I already paid for it. Again I like the bloated interaction of the program. Once I read up on it and as I believe it will confirm you pov, I am still stuck with the situation as it is. When W8 becomes available it will probably be too expensive for me to care to purchase and I will go back to Ubuntu. So I see no reason to change. I again and always have appreciated your experienced advice. Thanks for the links!!

What would you say is your estimate of the percentage of times I've been wrong about a diagnosis on this site?

You know what I take issue most with? I've told you more times than I can count about what is causing your problems, your refuse to remove it, you then ask for help in many other threads still, and then have the amazement to come in this thread and say it is working well.

I updated my NIS and it still seems to be working fine! FWIW

Gimme a break.

What can I say but I don't know your perfection, but I am confident in your knowledge and in your sincerity. But again, that forum stated that there was a shutdown problem without any 3rd party software intervention, proof no. You've helped me numerous times. And I am hoping you will continue to come to the rescue {:))!

I don't think that's a wise term to label someone such as myself that has tried to help your computing issues at least a dozen times and remained very patient throughout while the advice was refused to be put into practice, someone that had to read how other sites say this or that instead, and someone that for the sake of continuing to help the community as a whole, has had to refute your incorrect claims of a product working well.

I do what I do because it's a way I can give positive energy to the world in a way that is easy for me to do so. It gives me enjoyment to make others happy.

I was attempting to be cute, I mentioned numerous times the value I place on your council, thoroughly out of unpaid generosity.
Until you produced the anecdotal evidence to support your claim that Norton was the problem, I had to take you at you word and again I do not know your perfection. So when you what might be termed, ISSUED your ultimatum about ceasing my positive experiences with Norton and towing the line of your thought processes, or be cut off from your assistance (blackmail style) of my "countless threads" and to be laughed at whenever I run into another issue due to my lack of your knowledge, I, in the most polite way indicated that I thought this was not a fun thing. I am sorry to have offended you as you have been a of great assistance and I would not like to loose your council and help. But that is entirely your choice.
Cheers

Hello GMan,
I understand your viewpoint, although the reply seemed personal, but friendly funny, the GMan personality I've come to appreciate, but you have helped me and does this mean you won't help anymore, even if I don't mention Norton again?

My long-standing policy is not to work on machines with Norton. Don't take it personal.

Hello GMan,
I have removed Norton Internet Security from my W8CP machine. I have enabled Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, updated and did a complete scan. Everything good. Now it hasn't been much experience, but since the change it most certainly appears as if my shutdown hangup problem has disappeared. It has not affected the Windows defrag not working properly though.
I used the Norton Uninstall and the Norton Management unistaller. CCleaned it so I believe I got it all out.
Do you concur or is there more that needs to be checked to make sure Norton is completely off this machine?
You and a multitude of fellow members, even in the W7 forum have maintained that Norton is at the least a resource hog. I am hoping all of you are correct as I don't want no dang viruses {:))!
Thanks for convincing me to give it a try.
