Windows 8 usage over twice that of Windows 7 beta

The reason for that would be from counting the downloads! With previous versions like 7 you first had to sign up in order to participate as a beta tester. The 8 D.Preview and later C.Preview was made readily available for anyone!

I think this came about largely after all the 7 leaks a few years back with some not the real deal. Yet everyone was after any 7 build! MS wanted to play it smart this time around by making it far more widely available but upping the security by the new product key verification process as well as requiring the key be entered before any installation would proceed.

As far as anything on a tweet obviously MS wants to draw attention to the next version as one strategy there.

I don't buy it. Sevenforums.com had so much more traffic, visitors and threads at this stage than now here at Eightforums.com.

It can't be because everyone now has become very knowledgeable as a collective whole and everyone now fixes their own Windows problems. I dunno - just saying what I've seen and see.

It could be because leaked builds of Windows 7 were relatively easy to obtain, and therefore when Seven Forums was the same age as Eight Forums is now, more people were already using the new OS and had been for some time. On the other hand, although there have been a few leaks of Windows 8 these have been few and far between when compared to the same stage in development as Windows 7. It is only since the release of the official Betas (although they don't use that term), i.e. Development Preview and Consumer Preview, that this Forum has started to pick up. In addition, both Preview builds were made available to anyone to download from MS's server and they just kept a tally on the number of downloads.

I agree with Night Hawk, taking away the having to be a beta tester restriction opens it up for allot more people to get their hands on it. Its no surprise that download numbers are bigger now that you don't have to hit up a bit torrent site to get it. ;)

Yes, seems you're agreeable with me on this, and that would mean that Microsoft's blog post in the OP is marketing non-sense to persuade the masses with sheep mentality thinking. "Oh everyone is using it so I better start now too! Oh, you mean I could really buy stuff in Metro! Sweet! Clouds are great!"

Oh dear, If MS are posting that kind of drivel - they must be worried.

The forum activity is just a fraction of what it was with win 7 beta versions.

There isn't all that much interest in win8 at this stage.

Windiws 8 is the biggest change since Windows 95, it is making OS history so I am not surprised. I am currently runniung the Consumer Preview and it is a really stable and fast beta. I can understand why there are so many downloads.

Seems like you are missing the point of what we're saying. This website now and sevenforums.com then - the differences between usage is a reliable indicator. Right now, usage is not even close to what sevenforums was. By that alone, we know that Windows 8 usage is not even a small fraction of what Windows 7 beta was.

No, I obviously don't have that, but you could browse on sevenforums.com and see the volume of threads created in and around early 2009.

The volume would be even less if those of us who understand what is going on didn't bother to post.

If it was just left to the "everything MS does is perfect" brigade, then the forum would be even quieter.

There is definitely nowhere near the interest or excitement or win7 had at this stage.

Much of what (relatively) little has been posted about win8 has not been very positive.

It is a shame - there are some good things in Win8.

MS have wrecked it by forcing this metro stuff.

If they offered it as an extra feature - then they would have a much better reception.

8 may have twice the downloads, but if you subtracted all the people that un-installed again shortly afterward, then I think you would see the big picture. ;) Microsoft can say all they want about how many downloads have happened, its how many people that are actually still running it that counts. At least in my book it is. I think the user base is way lower compared to what windows 7 was.

There's no argument on that at all! While I am working on a 3rd install of the CP to a vhd in addition to the second test drive and VM others took one look and said: "What's this?" and hung it up!

Following the previous unfortunately not very popular Vista version people were looking for "something new and better" when seeing 7 for the first time and it drew interest like a bright light will draw bugs to it on a dark night! "EVERYBODY" was looking to get their hands on a copy of 7 which unfortunately lead to many opting for the wrong sources rather then signing up to participate.

Some of all those leaks weren't even leaks but...? fakes! Others were tampered with or developer builds not intended for private home user testing like the public beta and RC builds. A good number of threads were surrounding problems people had when not "staying with the program" and going off into the wild.

MS also had some leaks as well which explains their decision to tighten things up as far as the ability to install 8. You can no longer see a copy of Windows go on without a product key and that going through a verification process. MS got smart with that but wasn't that bright with the sudden change of gui for the unprepared populace it seems.

Too funny MS. No way in hell there are anywhere near as many people using 8 like they did 7.

Smells of MS finally seeing the writing on the wall for this release. The spin doctors are out in full force. More than W7, good chuckle I must say though, lol.

I'm not that surprized that many are simply not jumping at 8 after 7 saw a huge success! A good number of die hard XP fans have since upgraded and have found 7 to be an OS they want to stay with only to see a radical change of gui with 8?

With the MS mistake of not raising the minimum requirement up enough for Vista that version ended up seeing a bad rap where people elected to stay with XP until 7 came around and caught notice! The interest in 7 grew phenomenally. Unlike the two previous versions the immediate need for a service pack was another factor giving 7 the rep it deserved.

Getting past the Metro UI side of things the other improvements since 7 will likely be the best selling factor for the next version. Those are the things you don't actually find mentioned in most of the reports now being seen on 8 however.

Exactly, I think it was a great move by Microsoft to offer it up to anybody that wanted to try it. Like or hate it at least you know you got a copy that wasn't tampered with by a third party. And Microsoft gets to brag about download numbers. It's a win win for them at the moment. It could backfire if all the people that weren't happy with it refuse to buy it unless forced into it by a new PC purchase. Only time will tell. I'm not holding my breath but I like to think that just maybe, Microsoft will listen to the feedback and make some changes before the finale release. I won't get into that though as its been discussed in other threads.

Only time will tell. I'm not holding my breath but I like to think that just maybe, Microsoft will listen to the feedback and make some changes before the finale release. I won't get into that though as its been discussed in other threads.

Whether it turns out to be a success on the WP and/or tablet I have no idea as I don't use either. You are right though, the Metro UI and it's worth has been discussed, even argued about in other threads so no point in going over old ground.

I very much doubt though if MS are genuinely interested in feedback. I think they have an agenda and are going to keep to it come hell or high water. Whatever happens it sure is going to be an interesting read both here and elsewhere once Win8 hits the market.

The one thing I would add here is the wait for the Release Preview due out next month. That will provide a much better idea of just where MS is headed with 8.

I didn't care for the Vista RC1 when looked over and then waited for the retail release which I ended up with until the 7 RC was out still running a dual with XP back then. The 7 beta started off much better while still needing the RC to really get inside the OS there for some more extensive tests which included the backup features.

I expect I'll be finding the 8 RP to be as stable if not more then the 7 RC as a rule of thought going by the improvements in the basic side of the OS. That would be expected for MS being progressive in those areas despite the new dressing on top. In other words you have to get in there and look under the hood once you get past the "inconveniences" on the surface.
