Windows 10 could prompt upgrades of 600M aging PCs

Microsoft's Windows 10 is still in testing, but hardware makers can't wait for the day the OS replaces the controversial Windows 8.

Millions of PCs are aging, and those who have resisted Windows 8 will likely upgrade to computers with Windows 10. The initial reception to a test version of Windows 10 has been positive, as it resolves many usability issues affecting Windows 8.

There are about 600 million PCs that are four years or older, and those systems are ripe for upgrades, said Renee James, president at Intel, at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference on Tuesday.

If you use a start menu alternative and avoid using Metro crApps, Windows 10 = Windows 8. Don't see what all the fuss is about.

I have a copy of the Win 10 Beta installed. I'm not impressed with it as its Win 8/8.1 without the metro but there are still metro apps in the start menu, which is crap. Unless the final version is much different it will go down like Win 8.

:thumb: I was not impressed either with 10.. Same old song and dance as before, nothing new.. You still need to buy office, server and all the other MS software.. Sales are slow and MS needs to generate revenue, by out dating PC hardware. XP gone, Vista very soon to be gone, 7 is next.. 8 was gone as soon as 8.1 came out. 10 is 7 and 8 combined, with a few more mobile settings and tweaks. 10 is designed for business, to keep the look of prior windows versions and prevent re-training the OS to employees.. Although 10 tweak the metro apps, because nobody needs a full screen calculator.. But then again I use desktop mode and seldom use the metro apps, because the metro apps do not close properly.. They hold the last command even after clicking X to close.. Use the camera app, camera light stays on.. Use the reader, close it, can't delete the read file as the app has not released it. go to a porn site in IE app, two days later, your kid clicks on the app and wala there is the porn site in his face..

No one will be stuck at 8. You can get an 8.1 U1 ISO and do a clean install from there with a generic install key. After that, you can use the upgrade key to activate, if you went the upgrade route. No need to have 8.0 pre-installed...

Stardock made this available on Win8 with their ModernMix app. You can get that from them cheap, or subscribe to Object Desktop and get a host of other apps, like WindowBlinds, which returns sophisticated themes to Windows.

Really???...are we talking about the same thing?

..running a Metro App in a Window that can be run full screen, or re-sized and reduced like legacy windows?

Why would you not like this?

Yes, I use it... Start8, Modern Mix, and Decor8
I just think Windows 10 handles the windowed apps, in a far more elegant fashion than Modern Mix.

I think we are talking about the same thing

When I run a metro app I want it to be full screen as default, no desktop elements on it (ie taskbar)
When I close a metro app I want to be returned to the start screen, not left on the desktop

for me, unless I run a desktop program, or select the desktop tile, I never want to see any desktop items

I take the opposite view :) I never want to see no "apps" I never want to "sign up" to no Microsoft account or ever visit their store. I have all the programmes I will ever need on my desktop under a local account. After all "the cloud" is just somebody's server not some mythological super storage area in outer space. I have full control over my storage and back-ups both attached to the pc and detached from it.

If the future of windows if going to be totally desktop based, then I share your view of not wanting to see store apps or the store

I would like to think MS is going to give plenty of options, but I am not confident in this from what I see

They give me an OS that the focal point is the desktop, I will use it as a desktop machine (no metro for me)

I think some of you may have missed the point? "Upgrade" in that article is referring to upgrading to a new PC running Windows 10. Not just upgrading the OS on your current hardware. The OEM's want you to buy a new PC to replace your aging PC and they are hoping Windows 10 will aid in that. That's the way I read it anyway. I build my own desktops, if Windows 10 won't run on my current hardware I'll just keep running 8.1 until I build a new system. My laptop is fairly new and won't be replaced unless it dies, so it's the same deal there. I have an MSDN subscription so I can run what works (for me)and not worry about it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

They may want you to buy new PC's but there will be millions that won't but will upgrade to Win 10, whether the hardware is compatible or not.

Some of the older hardware will work perfectly well and others will not. There's a testament to that right now. XP users that have upgraded old Win XP hardware to Win 7 or Win 8 that isn't compatible or marginally compatible and now posting all kinds of problems (or posting because something works different than it did in XP). This happens with almost every new OS. We saw that when XP came out and older hardware, such as printers and scanners not compatible.

If new computers start to come with Windows 10 installed, then I'll keep it, but I really don't see me upgrading from 8.1. Windows 8.1 with my preferred customizations is excellent.

Sometimes I post these articles that aren't strictly "news", but more conjecture, supposition because they relate to the forum, but also because of the discussion that follows :D

Yes, the article is saying people put off buying a new PC because of 8, and that the hope is Ten is good enough to make them finally pull the trigger. We are a minority here, the majority just buys a pre-built PC and the current OS as a pair. A Guy
