The Surface Mini did exist, and was later killed

Microsoft, you killed the wrong product.
That’s the conclusion I've come to after spending a bit of time with Microsoft’s unannounced, but written off, device that it pulled from the Surface keynote at the last minute earlier this year; the Surface 2 is no longer fit for this planet. In an opportunity that was too good to pass up, I got the chance to play with a Surface mini under one condition: I was told that I could not post any photos of the device, for now.

(...)

As the rumors stated, and they were right, under the 8in display is a Qualcomm processor, 1 GB of RAM, Windows RT 8.1, USB support, and a microSD card slot as well. And as we stated many months ago, the device was going to come with the same pen that ships with the Surface Pro 3.

As far as its physical appearance goes, it looks much like a Surface Pro 3 but in a smaller form factor.
This all sounds familiar but what makes the mini unique - besides the pen and OneNote integration - is the case that goes on the device. Microsoft designed a fantastic case that goes on the outside of the device that brings a couple of defining features to the mini tablet.

The Surface mini was real and I got to play with one - Neowin

That's all I have to say. :(

    That's basically it.
Ugh, that really sucks they did that. Apparently the thinking is that the Surface Mini was a one trick pony as it's only good a note taking device since it's Windows RT and has inking capabilities like the Pro. That's not entirely true I find as RT is a fine platform for what it is.

My bet is when Windows 9 RT rolls out when Windows Phone and RT are to merge together, that's when they'll feel more confident about selling a small device like that sans Desktop and with touch first and only Office on it. That's what mostly holding it back, Desktop stuff on a small tablet isn't ideal.

Sigh..... I was ready to throw money at them for the Mini... Let's see if the Surface 3 happens.

I'm perfectly happy with my Surface Pro 3 so can't say I care one way or the other that they killed off the mini.

Hi there

IMO the MINI is a HORRIBLE size -- too large for phones --looks like one of those really stupid Phablets or those stupid people at pop concerts holding up ipads to take pictures while blocking other people's view etc.

(Why is it users of digital devices - whether phones, tablets, or music devices seem to make people totally inconsiderate of other people -- Loud music - with phones people often don't even use the headphones any more, ipads in photography stuck in front of your view at sports / concerts, phone calls made at incredible volume etc etc -- surely you can use electronic devices and STILL be a decent considerate Human being !!).

I loved it at the Tour de France in the English stages at the start when some cyclists had had enough of people jumping out into the road trying to take selfies - when the cyclists just grabbed the phones and smashed them on the ground !!!.

The Surface pro 3 is IDEAL for me -- I'm not sure there is much of a market for the Mini.

Cheers
jimbo

I'd be more interested than anything for a Surface 3 with Windows 9 RT.

I just want a damned Surface tablet for OneNote with an awesome pen for under $5-600... :(
