'Windows' for your phone instead of Windows Phone

Microsoft has been undergoing a lot of change under the leadership of Satya Nadella - from new events to a 'mobile first, cloud first' motto. The new vigor introduced by Nadella has been flushed through the veins of Microsoft and is paying off with a bit of pep in the Microsoft step.

While Microsoft has signaled intentions to go to a OneCore setup for Windows, it looks like they are also heading down the path of OneBrand as well. We have been observing this trend for some time and have been looking around for details to support our information and now it is starting to become clear. The most obvious example of this is with the conversion of Windows Phone into simply, Windows.

They should just stick with Windows Phone. Windows for your phone has a possibility of bringing negative connotation with Windows that people have with PCs. Windows Phone is something different than the Windows PC and therefore needs to have its own name.

Like the HTC One M8 for Windows, what the crap? What kind of naming is that?

Yep.

There was enough confusion with 'Windows RT' which has a lot in common with Windows 8 but won't run most Desktop software.

From my understanding traditional desktop will be coming back and Metro will continue to exist for touch screen pc's and tablets.

Also I may be misunderstanding what I saw this year at the MS build conference but with the new Windows run time environment I can write an application one time and should be able to run the application from Metro desktop to tablet to phone.

Where I am going with this is if the same Metro applications exist between all devices then calling the phone just "Windows" is not such a bad idea I don't think as long as the sell rep pushes that Windows Phone can run almost all the same application as Windows Metro on tablet/pc.

I personally feel this is a good story and option. I spend much time keeping up on the "Ubuntu Convergence" story and to me where I am watching Canonical struggle to pull this off while keeping users happy I believe MS is doing one hell of a job.

When I see "Windows for your phone" I automatically ask if said phone is running an Atom processor. It's just habit.

On one side, it's iffy because saying it's Windows for your phone has some connotations of doing things Windows PCs can do, which is not the case. On the other, it's interesting because going forward with WinRT, the things you have on your PC is on your phone. You use Windows on your PC and your phone. It makes sense, but I'd prefer it Windows Phone. It's proper.

But problem with pushing WinRT on the PC side, it kind of seems like it's shooting itself in the foot when you have a full desktop PC browser like IE installed. I've played around with using amazon or ebay apps, basically app versions of websites, I always go right back to IE with the proper website that has everything available to access. It doesn't help that IE was designed to use a single tap to open a mouse over menu either.

I foresee a day when one Windows OS will load and run on multiple devices. It will only load what's needed for a particular device. We saw the kernel shrink in size from 7 to 8.x. I think this will continues until it is small enough to run on mobile devices, with phones being the least powerful. As time goes on, devices are getting more powerful because of miniaturization. Then the problem isn't so much the OS as it is drivers, but that's going off on a tangent.

I think there ultimate goal is one Windows OS for all devices. From an operating cost view this would save $millions$ on writing code for them. It also gets a similar experience for users across all devices. In that light, yes, brand burning would be in order. Windows for phone, Windows for PC, Windows for tablet, Windows for your toaster. :p

I think they will port everything to Modern/Metro in 9. The desktop will remain for one final OS release to appease the OSosaurs and allow time for other software to get ported over. We shall see in just a few weeks. We will either jump for joy or scream. :D
