Microsoft increases OneDrive 2GB upload file size limit

Microsoft has increased the OneDrive file size upload limit from 2GB to an unspecified new maximum, a new report suggests today. Microsoft has also issued a statement confirming the change, but an official announcement has yet to take place.

"As we mentioned on our uservoice, we have started the work to increase the file size limit for all OneDrive accounts," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We have started the process with a small number of customers and will continue to roll it out to our full customer base. We will have more to share on this update in the near future, stay tuned to the OneDrive blog."

Nice, but the web interface does not support pause/resume, not sure if their app does, but it does not work on 8.1 anyway, since it desperately tries to run from the store, just another fail. Pity, pricing looked good.

I KNEW IT!!!! I was thinking it was a glitch from their OneDrive client for Windows 8.1 or that was a matter of luck for me, but then I read this article and confirmed it. I was able to upload 3 videos to OneDrive larger than 2GB file size limit (one of them is about 3.2GB) since Thursday night (my time zone is UTC -4:00). It finished uploading without errors on Friday at midday! :)

It is good to be able to upload files with larger size on their service, the 2GB limit was just simply pathetic... now, I'm waiting for them to enable music playback on the web interface and I would be happy forever! xDDD

Hi there

These days 2GB was just a total waste of time - even a SINGLE 45 min TV show in a reasonable 720p definition needs around 1GB - a full 1080p obviously more.

The problem though which I think Ms might fail to realize is that once many many people start accessing this service the servers will become hugely overloaded - it's inevitable -- HDD space isn't the main problem here but decent concurrent access from possibly a few MILLION users !!!.

Of course you also will need decently fast broadband and a NO CAP ISP service or you'll run out of your monthly allowance before you can say the word Windows.

Now even I might start using a service if I could store around 2 TB of music on it and do my own streaming. (I'd still have a local backup / archive though !!!).

Once that type of facility becomes sensibly available then parts of a Cloud service actually begin to make sense - but I'd never store personal / private stuff on any Cloud server. Multi-media is OK though IMO or the odd set of files that are too big to send via e-mail or you want to share with other people.

As far as music playback is concerned there *Might* be a solution to this --I'm looking at various possibilities.

Cheers
jimbo

I understand your point and couldn't agree more. And I'm pretty sure Servers will collapse when millions of users start uploading those 2GB+ content on their cloud, and why it will happen? Because it's Microsoft! Haha!!! :D

Now seriously, I use my account for saving documents, PDF's, some pictures (most important ones) and lots of Music. As a matter of fact I have uploaded so far around 20GB's worth of Music, and around 12GB's of DVD Concerts I converted to 720p MP4 video format to be able to keep them at a reasonable space without sacrificing video and (most important) sound quality. But I'm really disappointed about the fact that you can't do any type of music playback when on the Web Portal. I requested that feature like 3 times on their feedback service, and I'm pretty sure that MANY others had requested it as well... I just hope that they develop this feature as soon as possible. Then OneDrive could be a potential Dropbox and Google Drive killer! :)

I agree... but would it even be useful? With my bandwidth (or lack thereof) definitely not even entering my mind to test when/if it does become available...

After the recent incident with the iCloud, I for one am more convinced than ever not to use the Internet cloud for backup. Even if you have a good connection, and most of us here in the US probably only run about 1 Mb upstream is still too slow, and the security risk in my opinion are too high. The cloud is great for sharing family photos, collaborating on projects, and posting documents such as resumes. However, when it comes to personal information of any sort the Internet is not the place to be.

Microsoft, Apple, and Google all need to do a better job of offering their cloud services as an integrated sharing option. And then possibly under the backup options the people decide if they want to put all their files on the cloud. However, the default saving your data on the cloud, or defaulted as your backup location, is aggravating that best.

I have 38GBs of free storage on OneDrive using it all the time with my 8.1 tower and 8.1 Lumia creating/editing Office files and sharing pics & files with others. It's nice to have and I like free. :) Having no limit on upload would be a plus.

I think it to be wise not to store personal-sensitive files there or even on one's own PC/device HD. They should be stored and backed up on exterior drives and taken offline when not in use. Encrypting them would be a plus of course.
