Microsoft pulls security patch after reports of BSODs.

updated everything, even optional, no problems , or on a friends laptop

(only update problem I've had with MS was 8.1up1, wouldn't install at all, had to go with a stand alone ISO setup disk)

Microsoft pulls updates, recommends uninstall

Since Patch Tuesday this past week, Microsoft has been receiving reports of severe system errors caused by one or more of the updates. In response, the company has pulled several updates from download channels and offered advice on how to remove them. In one case, it recommends that users uninstall the update.

Updated on August 16: A Microsoft spokesperson tells ZDNet "[w]e are aware of some issues related to the recent updates and we are working on a fix."
Edward Langley at the Naked PowerShell Blog has written a series of PowerShell scripts to determine if any of the relevant updates are installed on a system.

The most severe case appears to be MS14-045 (Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege). The security advisory recommends that users uninstall that update.

Microsoft reports problems with three other updates and has pulled them from download and provided uninstallation instructions, but has not specifically recommended that users uninstall. Two of these are non-security updates released on Tuesday. The third is a re-release ("Revision: 7.0") on Thursday, August 14 of an older update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2; only metadata was supposed to change in the new version and users who had previously installed it did not need to reinstall.

I would suggest that is your system seems to be running fine since the update you're probably okay. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to uninstall the update(s) unless Microsoft comes forward and actually asks us specifically to uninstall the updates.

Only some people are having problems. Not everyone will have problems.

But, it wouldn't do harm to uninstall the updates if you feel inclined.

I read the uninstall instructions are long and tedious, wouldn't the easiest way to get rid of these August 11 updates is to do a system restore?

I just restored my system and then did the MS updates again and the problem updates were not included in the update list.

All my systems are running fine and I checked my registry for the .otf font entry and its not there and neither is the .otf file. So maybe that is the key to the problem systems.

Last week, Microsoft announced the latest iteration to Windows 8.1 Update named as August Update, integrating security features and improvements.

A number of users who have installed the update seem to be facing issues such as blue screen and system instability. Microsoft is currently investigating the issue and has removed the download links to these updates, reports Microsoft news. Below are the issues noted at the Microsoft support page.

Not hit by any of the problems, but followed the instructions to revert, in case of some future defects appearing.
Uninstalling the updates (on several laptops) went well (seemingly so far).

I took the cautionary path as well. Uninstalled KB2975719 and KB2982791 with no apparent issues.

I just uninstalled those two as well, had not had any issues yet but figure better safe than sorry - if they pulled those updates, figure I don't need them on my computer.
