Microsoft Said to Finish Windows 8 in Summer, With October Debut

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will finish work on Windows 8 this summer, setting the stage for personal computers and tablets with the operating system to go on sale around October, according to people with knowledge of the schedule.

The initial rollout will include devices running Intel Corp. (INTC) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) chips, making good on Microsoft’s promise to support both standards, said the people, who declined to be named because the plans are confidential. In embracing ARM technology, Microsoft is using the same kind of processors as Apple Inc.’s iPad. Still, there will be fewer than five ARM devices in the debut, compared with more than 40 Intel machines.

Windows 8 is more of a tablet use then computer use.

I don't have a tablet or any desire for one so I cannot say if it was made for a tablet.

I can without a doubt say that in it's current form it will never make it to my desktop.

There will be many people with the same sentiment. One thing is for sure, after Win8 flops worse than Vista, the people responsible for 'Metro' and taking away the 'Start' button should be out looking for new jobs.

Tablets are expensive toys. And if you really want to make full use of all their functions, you need a 3G/4G contract with your carrier. Adding all this up makes them more expensive than a decent PC with internet.

On the other side, there is a lot of money to be made. No wonder that MS is going after this market.

What 8 is focusing on is not so much Tablet PC and Windows Phones but Touchscreen displays for PCs which includes desktops! The complaints heard about touchscreen lcds however is sensitively where you go to open one windows and 2 or 3 windows open instead!

According to a ComputerWorld article MS is supposedly scheduling 8 to be released about the same time of year 7 was in October.

Microsoft to launch Windows 8 in October, report says[/h] [h=2]Analyst remains skeptical, believes date-driven release would be major mistake[/h] By Gregg Keizer

Computerworld - Microsoft will wrap up Windows 8 this summer, according to a report by Bloomberg on Monday.

Computer and tablet makers, known as OEMs for "original equipment manufacturers," will have Windows 8-powered PCs and tablets ready to sell in October, Bloomberg said.

The Windows 8 operating system will come in two flavors: Windows 8 for traditional PCs and business-grade slates and tablets, and Windows on ARM (WOA) for consumer tablets.

Microsoft
declined to comment on the Bloomberg report, which cited what the news organization called "people with knowledge of the schedule," who asked for anonymity.

Neither a summer wrap-up or an October sales launch would be a surprise: Microsoft finished Windows 7 three years ago this July and launched that OS on Oct. 22, 2009. New PCs went on sale at the same time, just as the holiday shopping season was getting into gear.

Analysts have expected that Microsoft is shooting for a similar fall release of Windows 8, possibly in October, to follow in Windows 7's successful footsteps and avoid a repeat of the timing of Windows Vista, which missed 2006's holiday season when it fell behind schedule and didn't ship until January 2007.

Microsoft has not disclosed a release date for Windows 8 but recently hinted that it would be this year.
