Screenshot Claims To Show Coming Windows 8.1 Start Menu

Mostly lost in the noise surrounding the World Cup final, a screenshot floated around the Microsoft-watching community. The image picked up attention because it contains what some claim is an image of the soon-to-return Start Menu in Windows 8.1.

Microsoft promised that the user interface element would come back in a keynote this April. In the ensuing few months there hasn’t been much to go on in terms of new hints of what it might look like.

First off, there is a Start Button (or rather Start Flag) that returned. It opens "Start" just as in the past.

A lot of speculation along with screenshot, pics, and videos have been making debuts for a while now. Simply speculation. That's all. Authors get hungry for topics.

I think MS will continue to devote it's efforts and time to the Modern/Metro and the Start Screen, not a returning Start Menu as we see some proof here: http://www.eightforums.com/windows-8-news/49837-microsoft-launches-new-windows-apportals.html

I just use a third party one. I use Start8 at home (prefer it's look and feel). I use classic shell at work. These add-ons make most people happy.

Is there any difference between Start8 and Classic Shell? I use the latter, but I'm curious what differentiates them.

I use Start 8, I got a suite of 12 different programs from Stardock for $20. I also use the ModernMix and Decor8, that is mainly why I use Start 8, I figure it would be more compatible.

As for the supposed new Start screen/menu, I think you will be able to turn on/off parts of it. Like you used to be able to select with Windows XP, anyone remember the Classic Menu as opposed to the new XP Menu? ;)

It would be great if MS returned windows 7 style start menu to windows 8.1 or 9 that could be enabled in options, that way people who like "modern" start screen couldn't complain too. I would like to be able to disable metro/modern part of windows 8.1/9 completely.
For now I use StartIsBack+ used Stardock start8 but switched to StartIsBack its cheaper and in my experience works better.
I don't use Modern (metro) apps because as of now they are inferior to desktop software when using keyboard and mouse. So I don't need modern mix or similar functionality but it would be nice if MS allowed to run Modern apps in resizable windows just like desktop software.

Hi there
I really don't like the classic menu any more -- also on Classic menu (or the 3rd party classic shell apps) how do you link Metro apps to it.

Much better to use custom toolbars (works with W7 as well) and then you can link Internet addresses, standard windows programs and metro apps (W8.1). No registry hacks or anything special needed either. Also you can CASCADE the metro apps too.

Currently I don't have too much use for Metro - but I'm sure new apps will appear in the not to distant future that will be useful - especially when they can run in moveable re-sizeable (and hopefully Borderless) windows (W9 maybe).

If you want to add Metro apps to your custom toolbars I had a post on this Forum a while back on how to do it . These apps will run from the desktop /menu directly without you having to leave the desktop environment either. (You can also pin these to the desktop if you want as well).

I do not need any Start Menu replacement as I am quite happy with the default Windows 8.1 Start Menu. However, of all third party Start Menu replacements I have tested, the Start Menu Reviver is in my opinion the best:

Hi there

That one looks interesting too -- I'll try that one out --thanks for the link. The only drawback I see with it though is that it's essentially "One dimensional" - I rather like the idea of Cascading menus -- so I can GROUP stuff together rather than have the whole lot displayed in one go -- especially say for a program or application that contains a lot of sub menus -- like a lot of video editing programs for example.

If it has to be in 1-D then I'd like the TOP application say to have a + sign under it and then be able to add sub applications so these are seen when you click the + sign. (The sub applications become expanded and visible and on a subsequent click become invisible again - menu contracts to top level application).

StartIsBack and I think Start8, classic shell has modern app shortcuts you can enable or disable it in options.
As I still haven't found any modern app that is useful or/and don't have more functional desktop analog. I have disabled modern apps shortcuts. Maybe situation will change but as of now windows store is full of crap ware or inferior to desktop versions software.

I use modern apps only on my windows 8.1 tablet because they are better optimized for touch.

Example of StartIsBack with modern apps enabled.

Hi there.

Trouble with things like StartIsBack etc. is that they bang the WHOLE kybosh into the menu. What I like about custom toolbars is you get to choose what you want and can group and name according to your taste as well. I don't like Classic shell either as it seems to introduce a small but perceptible lag when launching say an application like photoshop. You really notice that when you've got an SSD for the OS - the lag is small but definitely there.

If these menus were 100% user customisable then perhaps I might use them but I can't really see what's wrong with using a custom toolbar -- and the advantage is you can store the data into a file so if you restore the OS / move to another machine etc it just takes seconds to re-create the standard toolbar with all the links etc.

The leaked WZOR shot - if it's genuine to me looks the most likely candidate - I could use that one if it's true - but no biggie - I'm used to my custom toolbar.

I use SSD for my Windows 8.1 laptop and desktop PCs and I haven't noticed any slow downs with StartIsBack.
I have tried Custom toolbars, but they don't have some things that I use daily in my work flow.
I haven't used them for long time so maybe there is solution to my problem.
I want Windows 7/vista type jump lists so you can access recent files you worked and most common functionality (like send new mail etc.) of software right from start menu, so does custom toolbar offer similar functionality?
I don't like windows XP or older style cascading menu (because it sometimes can move far out of the bounds of menu and requires more of mouse movement) is there a way to make them like Vista/7 menu grouping?
I want control panel, power options (shutdown, restart etc.) and similar links in my start menu is there a way to get them in custom toolbar?

I don't think that custom toolbar is 100% user customizable, no start replacement or even original start menus really is.

Hi there

Custom toolbars are as customiseable as you want (as far as grouping / adding / cascading) applications.

To get to "Last used" or most used" programs could be done programmatically.

Now I'm not a coder but I could suggest the logic of doing this if someone who knows how to code this stuff wants to try.

1) Background process - records nr of times an application is started (you could "pre-customise that too so only specific application data is counted).
2) every so often add the data / update the data in the file used to create the custom toolbar.
3) update custom toolbar.

So next time you access custom toolbar you should see last used / most used applications on it too !!!

Haven't any idea of how to code this but in theory something like that should work.

2)ClassicShellStartMenu.jpg

Start Menu pictured above is just one of many possibilities with Classic Shell's start menu options.

Here's one of Classic Shell's settings pages for Start Menu configuration (I really like this control panel as you can simply turn-off hotspots and charms if you want--customization options are great):

3)CShellconfig.jpg

Classic Shell includes a classic browser, but the Start Menu is the only component I use in the package--you decide which of its programs you want when you install. Highly recommended!

What I find funny is that the screen shot with the start is the about the same for Windows 8.1 update 2 and Windows 9.
So from that all I can say is that it's all guess work on when and still if MS adds a start to the desktop. As for me.. I like Classic Shell but I will see what the new look is before I judge on what MS finally comes out with,

Umm no. The Start Flag takes me to the Start screen (aka the Metro interface). Yes it is a "Start" screen. But it is not what most want.

Did you look at the article and the screenshot? The Start Button pictured would open similar to how it is Windows 7 and how it is purported to be in Windows 9.

You mean Windows 7 advocates here on forums want, which are but a minority in proportion to the general public worldwide. It looks as though less users were using the Start Menu only to plaster icons to the Desktop or Taskbar. How many Desktops such as waltc just posted above have we seen? Therefore MS took Start Screen from the phone and made it better via Live Tiles and better personalization in order to organize to one's benefit. We've also entered an era of mobility, which demands touch UI, but one can navigate just as well with keyboard and mouse. BTW, Apps Screen is much closer to the Start Menu in functional replication, not the Start Screen.

http://www.eightforums.com/windows-8-news/2886-designing-start-screen.html

Yes. I read the article and many more like it recently. We can all speculate until we're blue in the face, but that's all it is > Speculation. Nadella must have laid the law down along with consequences if an employee leaks anything. It may well be that they give an option of the Start Menu. I'm not against it, but personally I'll never use it as in the past. I ended up using the Taskbar configured to hide on the right that was 3 or 4 icons deep. Personally I found that to my liking of which I found to be the quickest. That, along with Gadgets, eats up system resources as you know. I'd speculate that the average user doesn't have the powerful systems that most here have, especially laptops, although they've become more powerful in recent years, but with a price. A leaner OS was/is one of their goals.

I'll add here that 8.x has/is Modern/Metro UI and that the Desktop app/portal sits within. It, after all, has it's own Charms bar shared between the Start Screen. What's changed in 8.1 is that one can configure it to boot to the Desktop app/portal. It continues to have Charms, although one can shut it off.

Overall, to me it's not just about navigation anymore. It's about obtaining the most personal data upon boot or awakening in the least amount of time. The Start Menu didn't give me that. The Modern/Metro system does.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/16379-real-quality-boot-time-8-verses-7-a.html

Not only that, but personally I find using the Modern/Metro system with Charms much faster in navigation and in sharing data with others. I can't prove that for there's no scientific study to prove such. I haven't found one anyway. Perhaps someone has. Admittedly it has a higher learning curve, but once learned I find it to be much quicker.
Bottom line > They may make the Start Menu an option to appease some, but I think MS's overall ultimate goal will be a Modern/Metro > native, but cloud-centric to synchronize > touch-centric OS designed to run across multiple devices. Fredledingue stated it well here in this discussion:

Metro Start Screen can open Windows application on an operating system which supports Windows Applications and these operating systems are so far working only on computers.
Ballmer and his team wanted to bring with Metro lower capability on PCs. Today they want to bring highr capabilities on smartphones which is more logical.
With a little less bloat mid-range mobile phone could run Windows (a normal version) easily. As I understand Apportal is closer to a full Windows OS.

I'm creating this post on my patio deck having an iced coffee and speaking it into my 8.1 Nokia Lumia 1520 in one app then copy/pasting it into the forum posting text box via the browser because I simply don't want to sit inside behind my tower on such a sunny, gorgeous Sunday morning. Tech sure has changed and will continue to. Tower PCs have their place, but may eventually die off to such mobile devices as the Surface Pro 3, this phablet, and other such devices. At age 63 I may not see it, but I think it's inevitable.

With that, I'll post then touch the Start Flag to return to Start Screen to see what's up. It may be that I'll write a Word doc via voice and save it to OneDrive to edit or finish on my tower (or other device if I had one). Lean, mobile, and synchronization are the key words today. I simply can't see it accomplished with a Start Menu. :)
