Something "pretty amazing" coming to Windows Phone?

We have all seen Windows Phone 8.1 and know what to expect over the coming months, but it seems there is still something exciting to look forward to.

I wonder and I can't wait. Hopefully he's referring to the unified WP/RT and the 3D touch we've been hearing about, with Touch Office and inking with SP3's same pen on a Surface Mini.

It coo be. Whatever it is it'll be change and change is good. I think MS will continue to create an OS to work across all devices. Who else could possibly pull it off?

Thanks for posting even though it's not a whole lot of info.

I'll be that guy to say something generic about how Windows Phone's tagline should be, "Something cool is coming soon!" :p

My bet's on the Nokia McClaren and its crazy awesome hardware capabilities. This is something that's going to upset the Windows Phone world, what else than 3D touch and possibly an even better PureView camera?

Or maybe something improved 10 fold with Cortana?

Hi there

How about a phone that can do 3D printing !! - shouldn't be too difficult to interface a Windows phone to a 3D printer.
It would have to be proper Windows though -- the quicker they kill off RT the better.

By using a Meta language there's no reason why Windows (standard) couldn't run on ARM devices. There's plenty of examples where you have a common Source language which creates the appropriate code to Run on totally different devices -- for example one used almost everywhere - even though 90% of people have never heard of it -- SAP ABAP language. How and why RT is still hanging on IMO is a total mystery --if I were a developer I wouldn't be interested at all in RT -- it's going nowhere in the long term and you would be stuck into a TINY community without any sensible prospects of improving your career.

A Windows phone coupled to a 3D printer -- now that WOULD be something.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, it doesn't seem like anything has been announced or leaked. The only major WHOA thing recently is Project Adam, basically visual recognition of objects.

Microsoft Challenges Google?s Artificial Brain With ?Project Adam? | Enterprise | WIRED

From the main linked article, someone commented that they know a friend at Microsoft that told them the same thing when they asked if they should get the Lumia 930 or wait. So there's a chance it's hardware and software WHOA.

I place bets on 3D touch. There was a leaked image of a facebook tile on a Start Screen that seemed to display MUCH more than usual...

Looks like Barnacles, the senior MS engineer in the video is one of the 18,000 who got laid off.

Sad to hear. Even worse for everyone wondering if WP would truly come out with something amazing. Looks like it won't happen now. At least not anytime soon.

Do to all these layouts especially hitting hard on Nokia is such a stupid thing to do at this point in time. Wait until well AFTER new hardware is manufactured, then talk about layoffs.

Microsoft Mobile has quit a ton to gain but a lot to lose. Dropping a lot of the oomph behind that isn't a good decision at this time. But then again, this is over a period of 18 months...

Yeah, I fail to see what axing this feature will do to help. If anything, WP needs every bit of innovation they can muster, just as Nadella said that people only respect innovation.

Whatever the case, I'm sure they'll have something to offer in the high end come this fall. There has to be an awesome phone for the 920's 2 yr successor. I'm ready for my upgrade. And, no, the 1520 is too big and the 930 isn't good enough.

3D touch was not going to be a huge deal, nor was it going to work the way they wanted.
Glance has it's own issues and doesn't work all the time.

3D Touch on a phone is a long way off, they didn't kill the idea, just the Prototype.

I wish they would focus on 3D Holographic Keyboard for Surface Pro
That is where they should be focusing.

Seriously. I'm waiting more for the 1020 successor, faster memory write speeds, expandable storage, improved camera, the works and in red.

The 930 feels too much of a cross between an iphone and Lumia 920, bleh. I don't like big phones as is. It seems like they're more into doing low end and releasing average higher end hardware. The McClaren was supposed to be pretty impressive, but I was reading around that part of the reason they cancelled it was partly due to costs, partly due to the fact they didn't believe it was developed and refined enough for developers and consumers to use and make practical. Basically, more gimmick than practicality.

Ugh...but it would had been awesome. It would have been similar to Zune's MixView. The one thing that Windows Phone and Windows for that matter, is more Zune inspired design. I feel like ever since they changed the name from metro to modern, it's going to become generic modern and minimalist and doesn't help that google and apple are doing the same. Zune was something special, both the PC software and the Zune HD especially.

Early adopters of the 930 are reporting a lot of battery drain and excessive SoC heat.

My problem with the 930 is design, it's so not a Nokia Lumia. It's too squared off similar to an iphone but with the back side colored. It almost is like if apple crossed the iphone 5s and 5c together, just no. That, and no glance screen. Not all a deal breaker, but seems odd for a higher end phone to not have that.

The glance screen works perfectly with the proper firmware and ideally Nokia's ClearBlack OLED display over IPS such as the Lumia 920's screen. I can't fathom why they killed off the prototype of it since basically so much can be done with 3D touch, or at least even changing to behavior for pressing and holding a tile. That action could go into the MixView of a tile, such a thing might make it into Windows. Things like calculator, messaging, IE, facebook, every other social media app, and music/media player apps could be worked to have a MixView type action.

But, if Microsoft feels it's not ready yet for mainstream practical use, it might not be.

I had Glance on my 928, it was neat, but by no means a killer option.
I can live without it. My Icon kills the 928 as well.

I admit that the 930 heat issues are a concern.
But that alone doesn't warrant a comment about not being good enough over the 920 or a 920 successor
If the heat issues are a concern, then I would highly recommend the Icon.

As for style, well, that is subjective. Personally I do not care that much
I wrap mine in a case anyway. I have a Rugged Kickstand case that is great.
dropped a few times and no damage.

I'll take the Picture and Video Quality, the speed and smoothness of the Icon over anything lower.
If their are (rumor has it) more non-carrier specific phones coming, like the 1525 or 1025 (or whatever they will be called)
that is what I am waiting for.

As for Battery, you need to stop unnecessary apps from running in the background
You don't need every app you have installed running constantly in the background
I have a lot of Apps, and I stopped 80% of them from running in background. No issues here.

Don't quite know what you mean. They are releasing W8.1. How awesome is that?! I've been using 8.1DP for 6 weeks. Awesome OS with a lot of great features.

So far as layoffs; Perhaps they accomplished or are accomplishing 9 running across all devices, therefore no need for the WP department? When we see items such as apportals then they must be getting very close to that goal. I think Fredledingue in his post #9 explains it very well. Admittedly I can't quite grasp the whole concept yet.

http://www.eightforums.com/windows-8-news/49837-microsoft-launches-new-windows-apportals.html

And, no, the 1520 is too big and the 930 isn't good enough.

I read comments about the 1520 like this from time to time. I thought long and hard about the size before buying one. My kids have friends that are buying Samsung Galaxy Ss at 5.5 inch screens. I asked questions, held, and used a few to try the phablet size. When asked why that size a few answered that phones are too small and pads are too big. Now that I have one, I find the size ideal. Even a few women thought so and were comfortable with it.

Coincidentally, just this morning I met with some long time buds for breakfast. One brought his 9 inch Android pad. I didn't notice the brand. Guess who's device took less room on a rather crowded table? And who's can actually do more? He asked about mine, played with it for a few minutes, and commented that phablets seem to be the latest craze and will consider buying one.

Of course pictures, web, and docs are viewed bigger, but that's about it. I have no problems viewing, writing, and editing Office files on this thing. Yes, a bigger screen would be better, but I can fit this 1520 in my jean pockets. Cargo pants are actually better.

BTW, Brink bought one at the same time and stated recently he's liking it a lot. :)

Next on my list is a Surface Pro 3. I think that's a big winner.

My 920 has the "heat up and dead battery" issue regularly. My wife and daughter have the 928 and don't have the issue and they love their phones. None of us have the Win8.1 (Cyan) update yet and I'm an AT&T and they are on Verizon. When my contract is up with AT&T in November, I'll move to Verizon and see which Nokia Windows phone they have then... Maybe I'll keep my 920 until it dies...

If by then, there isn't anything better when you switch to Verizon and it is still being offered,
Do not hesitate to look at the Icon.
You will be glad you did.
it's an excellent phone, even better than the 928, which I also had.
I will keep my Icon till there is something better or it dies.

All you have to do is look at the Jet Car video I posted above.
And, watch the windows in the back ground.
