YouTube Video Shows How "Real People" React To Windows 8

Consumers downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview over a million times in less than 24 hours, but we're willing to bet that the majority of those downloads came from the technically inclined rather than, say, your parents. The tech world has already proclaimed what it likes and doesn't like in Windows 8 -- but do everyday people really care if W8 has an enhanced contact app? Can everyday people even locate the contact app in W8? Lockergnome's Chris Pirillo decided to put the W8 interface to the test by plopping his elderly father down in front of the new OS with no introduction.

I would have been lost too without the tutorial and reading & asking questions on the internet. I'm finding new things every hour I play with this and get to know it. I'm becoming comfortable with it, but there is still much to know.

Don't know, seems kind of an unserious attempt. Most people who would purchase, install, or upgrade to Win8 or who purchased or were given a Win8 machine would also have some familiarity with it or access to the manual, not to mention be able to ask questions.

Looking forward to the companion videos in the series where grandpa is introduced to Win7, OSX, IOS, and ICS in a similar setting and with similar conditions.

I am a grandpa and did not have the least problems to navigate thru Win8. Yes I had to ask a few questions to find some stuff, but that was minor. I think a 1 hour introduction would have made this grandpa comfortable.

Exactly. Even just pointing out the need to mouse over to the lower left corner to get back to start, you know, the basics, would have allowed him to navigate the rest of the system.

Not Obvious

This is the key. Without any guidance it will be hard for a non-geek. But I found that a 1 hour rundown of the main features makes average users quite comfortable. For XP, Vista or Win7 you would need more time to explain the basics.

That would be true for someone who has never used Windows before.

Most people have used Windows, so the first thing they are going to look for is the "Start Menu".

Exactly. Even just pointing out the need to mouse over to the lower left corner to get back to start, you know, the basics, would have allowed him to navigate the rest of the system.

That's exactly the point.
He couldn't do much because it isn't obvious how to do anything.

It's like the first time I saw someone using Office 2007.
It wasn't obvious that the "lollipop" was actually a menu button.
I was so stunned, I forgot that "Ctrl + P" would bring up the "Print" window.

Funny video and perfect test. But this man won't despair since he has help, many others without help will just get very mad. It is not only about finding the Start Menu back, it may take ages for non-skilled users to manage and re-learn everything.

I am now already only using W8 and deleted W7, but I still think that W8 can be a sales disaster for these excessive crazy changes and for too many wrong ideas.

Good times come for computers technicians. They will have lots of work helping desperate/angry people.

I don't agree. The confusion just begins at that point. Then they will open the wrong Internet Explorer for tablets and will panic not knowing what the hell is that. Then they will want to close it and won't find the way. When they'll manage to go back to the Start Menu they will try to reach their photos or videos, and the same problem will happen. They will be in the tablets app and they won't be able to see their photos or videos. If they try to find the settings they can be ready to spend a few hours passing the mouse around every corner and opening every wrong things. If they try to arrange the Start Menu they can cancel all their appointments for the next entire month. And when they will despair completely and try to quit, they won't find the shut down button. I am sure that many will break something out of anger.

It's a nightmare for people who are not skilled and don't enjoy the challenge of changes but just want to do their usual tasks.

The company that produces the dummies book , just sold off there travel books, cliff notes and webster dictionaries divisions should they could concentrate more on the books for dummies which are making the most money.

Apparently people are getting more dumb

I think the video was interesting to watch. I agree that the Start button HAS to be on the Taskbar, not the little Start Screen button, but the Start logo, button. On a tangent, I think how it is now segregates the two interfaces from each other and preventing them from coming together. Metro gets on top of the Desktop unnecessarily. The Start Screen should be the home screen, the Start launcher of sorts, not just a separate environment dedicated for touch.

But yes, there has to be an intuitive guide app tile on the Start Screen so at first boot, the user can explore the new Windows of a new era. I mean, I claim myself to be fully able to navigate Windows left to right, top to bottom, but Windows 8 is making me learn some new things; which I like and is ok to me. It's small things, like I can search for Windows in Internet Explorer, and then search that in Mail, or People or where ever. Or the Settings bar from the Charms bar has, settings for the app!

Honestly though, this video only shows an older generation of Windows users that still use xp. The people I've shown Windows 8 to are of the younger generations, and they have all found Windows 8 to be impressive. Just the metro IE 10 is ,"Fantastic!" according to a couple people I know. In fact, I think there was an article last year that spoke of how Windows 8 will be more popular among the younger crowds, under 30 years of age.

The video may only suggest someone is pc illiterate but does convey the actual frustrations many will have if they end up upgrading into a totally different OS from what everyone has been accustomed to. What is really needed and would likely be a best seller for W8 for Dummies would be a pictorial guide or walkthrough.

The rest is found by trial and error or just happening into something and then forgetting how to get back to it afterwards! This will also be a techmare for pc repair shops with the techs still tripping over themselves trying to find their way around.

Most with any pc experience from custom building and installing different versions will know right off about hidden menus and other OS tricks to watch for while the novice in the clip there can be likened all too well to the typical novice user. Buy a new 8 pc for your kids and one asks: "daddy how do you find things?" and where is dad? Stumped as well!

Even while this is only a beta not finished version you end up spending more time trying to find out where things went then actual testing of the OS itself. :( This is where the snipping tool or other press printscreen key screen capture tool to take snaps will be a large help as you go along to make up a reference guide of your own.

To a certain extent you are right. It is like an easter egg hunt. But that is the fun. If you are curious, you can find a lot of things on your own - just by trial and error.

That is certainly not the preferred approach for businesses that have to run their daily chores. But for adventurous geeks like us it saves money - no need to book a jungle tour. The jungle is on your screen. ;)
