    Agreed, we could go on all night and divert the topic further. For the record, the "screensaver" tangent does not reflect my career qualifications which are very real. We seem to be at logger heads over power cycles and the low level workings of the hardware v software interaction.

    Hmm.. good/lucky hardware there.

    If the hdd was pretty inactive or didn't defragged at the moment then there should be nothing to worry about. You can get data corruption or in a worst case a headcrash (still I think the heads of a hdd can land safetly at spindown).

    FWIW, there is no harm at all done by using the power switch to turn off a pc by holding it for 5 seconds.

    The reason the hardware engineers of today's pcs placed a power button there and allow the machine to turn off by using it, is because it's actually ok and well to use.

    They'd be fired if it were not.
