Surface-branded Miracast dongle

DrWindows.de reports that Microsoft is set to release a Surface-braded Miracast dongle for their tablet.

The news follows the leak of some accessory product images and suggests the dongle would plug into your HDMI port and be powered by the USB ports commonly found in TVs these days.

While the dongle will be Surface branded, and is expected to work well with the device, it should also be widely compatible with other devices, including the new generation of Windows Phone 8.1 handset.

Hopefully Microsoft prices the accessory sensibly in the $30 range to compete with the Chromecast, rather than its traditionally more expensive price range.

Looks like Microsoft is still grasping onto the edge of the cliff that Ballmer shoved them over. They tried and failed with the Zune because of poor marketing. They have also done the same with the previous tablet.

Chromecast has a firm grasp on a large market share. That Microsoft once again is late to the party.

I don't think its late at all. For me seems right on time.

My experience with the Google ecosystem is that Google tends to throw things at the market that are half baked, and lack luster in polish. On the other hand, Microsoft tends to be a bit more conservative and waits to have a fully realized idea with a level of polish that (in my opinion) currently surpasses even apple.

Oh yes, grasping oh so tightly that even it can't escape the relevance of some
to waste their time making Fake Apps for it. or for you to comment how irrelevant WP/Surface are.... please.

Probably best to not feed the troll. He's already ruined the networking section of the forum so now he's here to ruin another one.

I can only hope that forum management can see the light.

This is going to be fantastic if it comes to light.

I hate the idea of having to use a horrid Google infused dongle for media streaming poor quality content.

If MS can get a Miracast working unit to auto switch inputs like Chromecast, it's going to be infinitely more useful than mirroring your dumb phone on the big screen. I'd much rather mirror my actual Windows to the big screen like i'm doing now with the PTV 3000.

They just need to refine that so it works better and easily and they've got a winner.

Unfortunately, they often miss the mark. Windows ME, Vista before SP1 and now Windows 8.0, 8.1, Windows 8.1 with update 1 and soon Windows 8.1 with update 2. Probably should have let those bake a little while longer before tossing them out.
