China bans use of Microsoft's Windows 8 on government PCs

China has banned government use of Windows 8, Microsoft Corp's latest operating system, a blow to a U.S. technology company that has long struggled with sales in the country.

The Central Government Procurement Center issued the ban on installing Windows 8 on Chinese government computers as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products, posted on its website last week.

The official Xinhua news agency said the ban was to ensure computer security after Microsoft ended support for its Windows XP operating system, which was widely used in China.

Microsoft will continue selling Windows 7 to Chinese government after Windows 8 ban

In an email statement to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson said the company was "surprised" to see its new operating system banned, and that it will continue to sell Windows 7 to government clients until a resolution is reached.

"Microsoft has been working proactively with the Central Government Procurement Center and other government agencies through the evaluation process to ensure that our products and services meet all government procurement requirements," the statement reads. "We have been and will continue to provide Windows 7 to government customers. At the same time we are working on the Windows 8 evaluation with relevant government agencies."

I've often wondered about Windows energy saving policies.

I can pan and zoom around 500MB images in Photoshop quite happily with the GPU sitting there quietly all day long. Yet, I only have to open a blank Internet Explorer page and the GPU fan goes nuts. Can't be very good for energy consumption and obviously isn't calculated based on GPU load or temperature.

I don't think they would be crying if all those copies of XP on government machines were pirated, I think they just don't want to pay for Windows 8; maybe a discount from Microsoft or the US making a large payment on Chinese loans might change their minds about upgrading all their government machines to Windows 8.

That's what I read somewhere the other day. How true it is I don't know. But yes, I agree, either way they are not happy spending the money to upgrade all the PC's they have running XP.

Not only is it true but in the past China has been caught selling illegally made Windows CD's with hacked Windows key's by the millions.

This is one of the reason's that China has it's own special Windows 8 .ISO's because Msoft knows how big they are on pirating.

The trouble with that theory is that the US blames the Chinese Government for writing malware that infects Windows.
If that is actually true, then they should have no problems writing their own XP patches.

In fact, they could release XP patches, undercut Microsoft's charges and XP users would never have to upgrade to W8.

Also, if anyone could locate and disable NSA backdoors/hacks it would be the Chinese hackers.
Of course the NSA backdoors/hacks would be replaced with the Chinese versions.

Hi there.

In some ways this is actually GOOD for Ms. It's a well known fact that the more people try to BAN stuff (with very very few exceptions) the more people want it. There actually will now be some sort of "kudos" if you have a PC in China that runs Windows 8/8.1 on it.

Universal law operates here - The Law of Unintended Consequences. You see examples all over the place.

In Some European countries for example you have very severe Rent Controls and almost impossibly long Hire/ Lease periods -- so what happens -- supply of rentable properties dries up, housing lists get longer and longer, huge Black Market operates, and because of restrictive controls Landlords can't be bothered to repair the properties,.

So while the basic idea is good (affordable housing) the implementation merely exacerbates the very problem the system was trying to solve. -You can see the same sort of stuff all over the place so you have to be VERY careful in doing things like Banning suppliers / goods / services or implementing restrictive policies.

Cheers
jimbo

This China Ban is just Government purchases as far as I can tell so there won't be any "kudos" for the average Joe. I do see your point though.

xp extended life

Its not exactly true that XP support has been dropped.
For the average Joe IT IS TRUE.
However, MS and quite a few goverments/large corporations have come to a (paying) arrangement by which its life and support structure will be extended, by at least 2 years.
