Updating OneDrive: Five New Features You Asked For

We always prioritize feedback from our customers. And today, we’re announcing a number of exciting updates to both the web and our mobile app that deliver on some of the top requests we’ve received. These updates will be rolling out to OneDrive users over the coming days.

More beautiful photos and videos

Viewing photos as small thumbnails can be a strain on the eyes. To make the photos and videos you care about easier to see, we’ve increased the size of thumbnails to create a more beautiful view of your photos and videos.

We’ve also added your videos to the All Photos view to make it easier to find and watch the videos you love.

You may also notice that our video playback has improved with this release as well as adding support for more browsers and mobile phones.

Album Cover Customization

OneDrive automatically creates rotating covers for your folders to give you a peak at the photos inside. There are many times, however, when it might make more sense to just select one and set it as a static cover photo. We’ve heard your feedback!

Now you can easily set the folder cover by selecting the photo you want, clicking Manage, and then selecting Add as cover.

Publishing Videos to Facebook

A few months ago we made it possible to natively publish photos on OneDrive to Facebook. This update brings the ability for you to also publish videos to Facebook too!

But the really exciting thing about this is that the videos (and photos) you share to Facebook are natively published. So when you have that awesome video you want your friends to see, they can see it straight in Facebook (without clicking back to OneDrive) and they can comment, tag, and do all the things in Facebook they are used to. In this case, this is a video of me riding an Evolve Street Carbon Electric Longboard in our parking lot!

Add new items to previously shared collections

OneDrive lets you share individual files in a folder as a group. This is pretty convenient In the case of photos when you only want to share the best vacation photos from a folder containing hundreds or if you want to share a few photos of an event from your Camera roll.

Now we offer the ability to add more items after you’ve already shared the original grouping. Just go to your Shared view, right click on the group that you want to modify, and select Add.

A more powerful Android app

And finally, we worked to update our mobile app on Android to give you more power and more control. In the latest release (version 2.5 for Android 4.0+) you can now:

  • Share files and folders by inviting people, sending a link, or sending files to another app
  • Update View and Edit sharing preferences
  • Select multiple files to download
  • Move files and folders
  • Sort files and folders

We are really excited about these updates and if you have any more requests, leave a comment.

It's nice that they've made some changes, even if it does seem like they've just has a quick look at Flickr and copied a couple of ideas across, however I was playing around with it a few days ago it seems there are some fundamental usability issues that could really do with being improved in Onedrive, before messing around with things like thumbnail sizes and album icons.

For example, if I uploaded 200 folders containing photos and the folders are all named by date such as 1995.12.25 Christmas Day, 1995.12.31 New Years Eve, etc. (and the same with the file names of the photos). Why are users forced to use some programmers ideology of having them sorted by 'Date Created' as default? Why can't I choose to change the default setting so that all my folders and files are sorted by descending/ascending 'Name' order instead and for it to remember this setting permanently for both me and for people I share the link with?

The same goes for having the default view as 'Thumbnails View'. Why can't I choose to change the default setting to 'Details View' instead and for it to remember this setting permanently? Whether just for my own use, or sharing the folders with other people, the user who's account it is should be the one who decides how the data is displayed, not whoever programmed Onedrive and their own personal likes.

Also, when you create a share link for a top level folder, then create another different share link for a subfolder under it, why does it create a duplicate of the subfolder in the top level folder for people who have full access? Having a duplicate of the same folder makes it extremely messy, confusing and disorganised.

That's the problem with Microsoft these days, it seems they want everyone to use their products how they decide people should use them, instead of giving the users the options to use them how they want to use them.

That's alright. Your ISP does, and they don't mind using it to throttle it down for folks. ;)

Yeah, unfortunately though if you manage to saturate your upload speeds, usually you have almost 0 download speed. So, I like being able to upload to the cloud, but I want to rate limit the upload and let it trickle up. One reason that I use DropBox.

In that case, you might see how the free version of NetLimiter may work for that.

Yeah, I've used that before to simulate low bandwidth for applications before. It's a bit too much of a pain, a checkbox with a field would work much better inside of OneDrive.
