Start Menu will reportedly return to Windows 8.1 this fall

At BUILD 2014, Microsoft surprised many by showing off a Start menu that will be making its way back into Windows. After Windows 8 debuted without the iconic feature, there was a great deal of negative feedback, and along with numerous other contentious issues surrounding the OS, it eventually lead to the departure of Steven Sinofsky.

But with Windows 8.1 and its first major update, Microsoft has been slowly re-introducing classic features and has made a commitment to making the OS more mouse- and keyboard-friendly.

Ever since the Start menu was shown off, everyone has been wondering when we will see it return to the OS and, according to Wzor, the answer will be this fall.

Whatever. . .Got used to using the Start screen and see no reason at this point to change, heck my iMac 27 using OS X Merrick doesn't have a menu. . .so can see no reason for one on 8.1.1. . .to each their own though. . .

Yucky.

The greater irony is that the user base that said that the Start Screen was just a giant Windows Phone, the start menu will quite literally allow you to have the Start Screen size of Windows Phone. So in the end, it's right back at square one...

ClearType font smoothing changed in Win 8 to use greyscale antialiasing. In Win 7 ClearType used subtle colors for the antialiasing. Some fonts at certain zoom levels look bad in Win 8.

Well I'm quite happy with ClassicShell. I like the ability to modify my start menu as I like it. Funny thing is if MS hadn't taken it away I probably would never have needed anything like ClassicShell and now I really like it. I still don't know anything about the metro apps I guess with the win 8.1update2 perhaps these apps will work like Gadgets on the desk top that might be OK I'll just have to see. I know I sure didn't like them taking over my desktop in full screen.

I'm happy. Firstly, when I do update my desktop to 8.1, which as much as I loathe to will probably be late May- I have a twenty-two inch screen to do my PC work so size isn't an issue and even on my laptop, it'll be less work breaking than the start screen. I'll be able to do the basic searches in a corner of my screen again and unclutter my desktop of items I put there just for quick clicking. I can use the start screen but it's still a second to a clean and sleek start menu. The third party options were an abysmal failure for me and I can just remove most of the modern apps except for the weather one. It'll be an updated version but one that helps me. The start screen is okay but it just doesn't have the same simple sleek feel. It might be a psychological focusing trick but the start menu is useful for many, myself included.

I'm impressed with Microsoft actually responding to what a part of its customer base wants and giving it as part of the Windows 8 experience rather than a carrot for Windows 9. That alone gives me tremendous faith that should at my three year cycle mark in 2016, a new desktop make more sense than upgrading components, that Windows 9 is worth the leap. Steve Ballmer's exit is clearly being followed by Microsoft paying heed to Windows users rather than the former CEO's approach of users needing to be taught to like his vision for Windows.
Microsoft does demonstrate to companies like EA that just because you have a massive user base does not mean you get to ignore their concerns because users are disposable numbers.

Hi there.

The font issue might just be down to your video card / screen / external monitor you are using. I can't say I've noticed any difference in the fonts.

What I do notice though is most I.T developers must have exceptionally good eyesight as it always seems to me the application menus and text sizes are often too TINY especially on large screens and it's the devils own job (but do-able) to get these to be of readable size -- a good case in point is with Adobe photoshop CS6 - the menu texts are TINY !!! even on a massive screen. (BTW the font issue also is an issue in most Linux distros but it's actually much easier to customize desktop and application views).

See screenshots below for examples - Windows IE11 and Linux KDE opensuse 13.1 Konqueror browsers.

As for start menu or not --that to me isn't an issue any more - I use custom toolbars / desktop icons / quick launch bar.

What I'm glad about is that the system boots straight to desktop -- for me those full size "metro" type apps are hideous --even when they make some concesssions to the desktop -- like starting EXCEL 2013 -- I've gone back gladly to Office 2010 where I'm staying until it no longer works (will have retired long past its expiry date anyway).

Ms as has been said all along could have introduced the metro stuff without fuss and bother had they done it via a decent pre-sales spiel before launch to explain what they were doing and to give users the choice so users could be weaned on to the new system gradually.

If you've ever done any teaching you will understand that often even quite simple things have to be carefully explained in simple terms and usually several times.

Ms broke rules 101 both of Sales / Marketing AND teaching. I suspect though W9 (or whatever) will be far better and able to do the job both for the desktop and the mobile stuff. Ms isn't the sort of company that sits down and quietly withers away.

Here's an example of Font / menu size problem -- shot 1 -- IE 11 in Windows 8.1 -- Browser TEXT OK but application menus still small

shot 2 -- Konqueror browser (built in to KDE desktop) from Linux OPENSUSE 13.1 -- both text size and application menu size fine.

Cheers
jimbo

I don't really want the start menu... at all! Start Screen is (by far) better for searching applications, of course if you take a little time to organize it. :D

What they really need to do (to satisfy the mouse/keyboard user base) is to get rid of the Win+X menu and substitute it with the Start Menu.
Example: If you want the Start Screen to show up, press the :winkey: logo or the 'Win' button alone, and if you want the old Start Menu just right click the :winkey: logo or use the Win+X to show it up... that's it!

I see no reason this method I proposed will be another pissed off (or any kind of problem) to mouse/keyboard user base in order to get what they want, of course without messing up users like me who prefer the new Start Screen. And if they do have any problem with it... maybe those users are lazy as rubbish. xDDD

Yep, you get my vote 100%. :thumb:

I've got a new, (2 months ago), iPhone 7, i5s 64bit OS, and am fully conversant with using side by side apps on desktop of this phone; and can sail thro the menus for various tasks.

But when it comes to a desktop PC or laptop for user friendly, serious computing and multi-tasking, give me a Win7 style alpha-numeric cascaded start menu any day.

Sure you can do all the same tasks on the W8 start screen. But it's like using a rowing boat for a trans-Atlantic crossing instead of flying.

And if they do have any problem with it... maybe those users are lazy as rubbish. xDDD

*Please, do not hate me for this!!!!

I partly agree with you, I wouldn't mind your proposal if there was an option to switch the left click for modern / right click for classic start around. Ie left clicking the windows button would bring up the classic start menu and right clicking it would bring up the modern one.

BUT, I do like this new hybrid start menu MS is bringing in better than what you said

I am stoked by this news, though I hope they do it smart and give folks more options rather than less. I personally, sometimes like the start screen, and sometimes like the start menu. Just depends on where I am looking to go. Still, with Classic Shell, I have gotten very used to having access to both and I would not really relish the idea of losing that. If I was forced to choose, I would take the start menu, as even after all this time, I still find it to be more intuitive than the whole start screen. Still, it would be nice if they would still keep the option to run both in the OS. Looking forward to not running 3rd party apps to achieve basic stuff that should have been included in the OS all along!! woo hoo.. nuff said!
