Desktop will stay - MS OS chief Myerson

Two good articles from Mary Jo. Interview with Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of operating systems

Microsoft OS chief Myerson on the future of 'One Windows' | ZDNet

Microsoft OS chief Myerson talks turkey on transparency, cadence and cross platform | ZDNet

MYERSON: We actually value using the desktop. I feel highly productive using it. It's very familiar to me. We plan -- (as) we talked about at the Build conference -- to bring modern apps to the desktop. We are going to have machines that have a great desktop experience.

It (the desktop) is also not the right experience for a phone or a tablet. And so how the Windows experience spans these form factors and is familiar across them -- that's what we need to deliver if we're going to delight people in the whole ecosystem.

The desktop is part of our future. It's absolutely core to Windows.

Jim

We plan -- (as) we talked about at the Build conference -- to bring modern apps to the desktop. We are going to have machines that have a great desktop experience.

Sounds like another way of saying 'We couldn't drag you from the desktop into our simplified, monetised, content-consumption-only Metro, so we're going to try the opposite approach, and force our simplified, monetised, content-consumption-only paradigm onto the desktop. You are NOT getting away form our 'vision', like it or not'.

Hi there

I gather Windows 9 will have a feature that sends 1 USD for each keystroke you make into Ms's bank account.

That aside of course the desktop will stay -- there isn't actually any faster way of inputting text to a document other than typing it with a decent keyboard -- voice translation and even handwriting aren't anything like as fast as even a moderately experienced keyboard user -- and as for selecting / moving bits of text / pictures etc a MOUSE still is the best tool for the job --doesn't work on a smallish tablet with large sticky fingers.

(And of course once you attach external monitors / mice /. keyboards / external storage to a say a newer decently powered tablet --what do you have ? --I believe it used to be called a PC !!).

cheers

Yes, you are... ;)

MS is no different from other ecosystems, where the content consumption is monetized directly and/or indirectly. Except that others are accepted by people, while MS joining in to the fray is frowned upon. Wasn't having choices a good thing?

Like any other ecosystems, it's the choice by people, if they want to buy into their system. And even if they do, it does not mean that they'll need to keep purchasing apps from the chosen ecosystem.

There's nothing in Windows 8.x that would force content consumption to be monetized continuously. To my knowledge, purchasing apps for Windows 8.x is an option and not a mandate. People could just boot to a the desktop and use desktop applications, be that MS and/or other companies, without ever seeing the Metro interface.

Does that mean Win32 or WinRT? The 8.1.1 update basically just reaffirmed their WinRT app ambitions and put it on the Desktop and will continue to do so as well as develop it out even further. I'd prefer them to make every system component into WinRT as much as possible and even try to skin the nonportable Win32 parts to look and feel new and fresh versus what we have today with a mish mosh of everything everywhere without a single thread of solid consistency.

Absolutely not. WinRT is fine in certain spaces, but not for an Environment.
If I wanted that I would buy an iPad or Chromebook or an Android Tablet, hell, Even a Nook or Kindle.
Seriously?

For real power and overall consistency, we need full blown desktop apps that can take full advantage of a system.
WinRT is not that environment.

So, what we are going to get going forward is one Environment across all systems.
There will be the subtle differences between them, it's what is call App Unification.

One Code, different UI's across all platforms.
Now, this is for apps, but we still need desktop to take advantage of powerful software and multitasking.
Just as an example, You aren't going to get a proper Photoshop in an App. You won't get a Proper CAD environment in an App.
Not efficient ones anyway. much less getting a proper environment for Visual Studio (any flavor).

App's absolutely have their place, but without desktop and 3rd party powerful software, you have just another iPad.

Good luck with that.

As to the OP....

Doesn't matter what the reasons are,, the fact they are sticking with Desktop is a positive.
I am certain getting rid of Balmer was a good move.
Maybe we can get a proper Windows going forward.
Not saying that there is that much wrong with Win8x, but it does need improvements.
With that said,, which OS doesn't? That's a rhetorical question, there isn't one.

And all I can say to that is that I'm glad you're not running MS, because that is a direction I WILL NOT go.

Wenda.
