Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a Mandatory Update for Future Security Update Offerings

Microsoft has now gone ahead and released the KB Article for Windows 8.1 Update 1 ahead of the April 8, 2014 public availability.

You can read the full KB Article (2919355) here: Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Update April, 2014

However, there's one very important piece of content in the KB Article that really needs its own special highlight. In the Introduction section it reads:

Important All future security and nonsecurity updates for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 require this update to be installed. We recommend that you install this update on your Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer in order to receive continued future updates.

So... how does this affect the folks who stayed on Win 8.0. My guess would be that they lose updates support, but the article in the link only mentions 8.1. I know quite a few who never bothered installing Win 8.1. It's dated April 2 so it shouldn't be April Fool.

It should be safely assumed that latest updates will be incorporated into future 8.1 upgrade. So, people wanting to upgrade to 8.1 should wait till some time after update comes out so they can do it in one shot.

In Brink's post it says you must have 8.1 already to get the 8.1.1 update:

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must be running Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, or Windows RT 8.1.

It seems you cannot get 8.1.1 unless you already have 8.1.
I could be wrong.

That's probably right, I thought I was clear in thinking that people that want to upgrade from plain Win 8 to 8.1 should wait until 8.1.1 updates are incorporated so they don't have to do extra updating. It would seem logical for MS to include newest updates in future upgrade.

To get update 1 you need to be running 8.1. If you are running 8.1 and don't apply update 1, no more security updates for you. One of the updates in the update 1 package is a security update. That update is a prerequisite for any further security updates. I don't know what happens if you stay on windows 8.0?

It is a bit of a mess. Microsoft tried to do the right thing by offering 8.1 free to those already running 8.0. Unfortunately its a big update, its effectively an OS upgrade, so doing the upgrade though the store doesn't go so well for a lot of people. I think if they would just let the average Joe download a Windows 8.1 ISO it would make things a lot easier. They obviously want everybody that's on 8.0 to move on to 8.1. They just don't seem to be making it all that easy. Those with factory OEM installs are in the worst position. They can't do the download that was posted in another thread, it only excepts Retail keys. So its 8.0 > Windows Update > 8.1 Store upgrade > Windows Update > Update 1 though Windows update > etc.

If only Win 8 was made what win8.1 is now, there would be no problems now. To change half of system is not an easy task specially if it has to be done over internet that is not really 100 Mbps in 99% in most of the world. A nice, clean service pack .ISO would have been much better and could be downloaded at leisure. Clear HW ans SW requirement change explanations would spare a lot off people "stress" and confusion about upgrading. I see MS's public relations, marketing and top management (Ballmer) as the main culprits for the mess about otherwise fine OS.

OH. Allot I know by OEM disks with a new hard drive or CDRom because they save $100 - 150. That's a shame.
I always buy OEM. I don't need a plastic box with a pretty picture, not when the pretty picture and plastic box adds up to $150

Other Microsoft operating system had multiple beta releases. They just weren't available to the average Joe, like the Preview builds of 8 were. Most people didn't see them or all the changes that happened in each build. In the past only Beta testers got to se them. Beta releases like Preview builds are unfinished products, what were you expecting?

I had various iterations of Win 95 betas for a year before I waited until 2 AM to buy release version, installed it same night and found ( to my great consternation ) that beta was better. Later on I found that there was some flap about parts of Norton in final version.

Maybe it's just me, but daily 'updates' and pseudo-mandatory new OS versions every 6 months are REALLY starting to make me angry.

I want to be able to update what and when I choose to, and once every three years is just fine for a new OS build.

Instead, sadly, I'm slowly but surely losing interest, the way computing seems to be headed.

Another "W8 series" fiasco?

It seems like MS hasn't learned from the previous W8 -> W8.1 upgrade debacle.

The real problem is that Windows 8 has been nothing but a series of poorly received betas....
Has anyone seen an OS change so much? And most people still don't like it. What a joke....
I think that Rxd meant the RTMs are effectively Betas.
