[h=1]Windows 8 Consumer Preview: PC Settings, Personalization Options[/h]
One of the changes that Windows 8 Consumer Preview arrives with when compared to the Developer Preview is related to the personalization options that users can benefit from.

To access them, you will simply have to bring up the charms bar to the right, then hit Settings > More PC Settings.

You will land on the Personalization screen, where you can change the Lock Screen picture, as well as the Start Screen background color, along with your account’s picture.

The customization options available for the Start Screen are new to the Consumer Preview, but they are expected to be enhanced in the next platform releases.

Of course, there are also the personalization options related to the desktop, its background and theme, and window colors, available either via the right click menu on the desktop, or through the Settings charms when on the desktop.

On the Lock Screen, you can also place applications that will provide you with updates, so that all info is at hand fast and easy.

Next, there is the Users screen, where you will be able to switch between local accounts and Live / Hotmail accounts, so that you have files, settings, apps and the like synced between PCs.

more plus several screens

There's going to be a large variety of mixed opinions once enough people what this next version will look like! Flame wars? That may be putting it mildly when the harsh reactions start pouring in! :what::doh::mad::roflmao:

Many are already shaking theirs heads! In the meantime I have to continue looking at how to get things to work in this one. Did you know you can shrink the items in fact the entire Start screen down? You will need a scroll mouse however.

Minimize W8 Start Screen.jpg

You may have to take a real look since capturing the lower right hand corner was a bit tricky. But a small taskbar will appear on the bottom of the screen with a button at the far right you click on and then use the scroll wheel to resize all the new shortcuts!

You can also create your own Quick Launch bars using the same method as used for 7. With the new layout and no Start>All Programs>Accessories for example getting to the Calculator, NotePad, Defrag, command prompt, and mspaint has been Real Fun! :sarc:

Fortunately with a little folder browsing for exe files like mspaint.exe and a right cliek to see a new shortcut placed on the desktop the new Quick Launch folder used for a new toolbar addon sees them dragged into it!

Make Your Own Start Menus.jpg

If you are running a dual boot with 7 the easiest way to locate each item is booting into 7 and right clicking on each item's icon to see the file location. Many are found in the C:\Windows\system32 folder while others are under Program Files or Program Files(x86) depending on which Windows flavor you have for 7.

Now these steps for the time being may only see a temporary application but will help get many through the "getting familiar with" stages we are all going through. You can see why some are seeing 8 as another flop! Here I had hoped they would have continued in a progressive trend working off the success seen with 7. Didn't turn out that way as they seemed to have gone off in a different direction!

How I made a Start Menu

I basically used Brink's tutorial:
Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder - Windows 7 Forums

If you're out there, thanks Brink. :D

What I did to make a "Start Menu" was:

 • Navigated to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu"
 • Right Clicked on "Programs".
 • Chose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)
 • Changed the to icon to the Window Flag in "imageres.dll".
 • Right clicked on the shortcut
 • Chose "Pin to Taskbar".

It's not entirely safisfactory, so I am also experimenting with a toolbar.

I just created a toolbar linked to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

Well that's another idea put to use! Here since i have several addon toolbars in 7 the idea was deployed in the 8 CP as well only with a bit of digging rhrough folders for things like Word and NotePad in addition to other system tools. The toolbars are also great for keeping the desktop free of clutter! :D Quick Launch - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums

Rather then pinning a folder I simply made it another addon toolbar.
