85% of people wouldn't know it was avail. lets face it, the only people that care are registered here.

Take my wife for instance, she would still be using 3.1 if it wasn't for me, if it does what she needs, she doesn't care. Which reminds me, I should get her to upgrade that Motorola Razor

The majority of people don't like change.
Serious computer users don't like their stuff 'screwed with' and MS screwed with this one real good;

My wife's laptop is still running the factory OEM 8.0 install. All she does is Facebook and an occasional Google search. I just put off updating it as I don't use it and she would never no the difference even if I did update it. I'll get around to it eventually. She never goes to the Windows Store so she hasn't been prompted to do the update or even knows its there.

She never goes to the Windows Store so she hasn't been prompted to do the update or even knows its there.

And that i think is the reason that people haven't upgraded (updated?) to Win 8.1 they don't even know its there, they don't go to the store and don't use the metro / modern interface.

Why Microsoft hasn't made it available via windows update is anyone's guess, bloody strange decision if you ask me.
Can see the same happening to update 1 that's supposed to be coming beginning of April.

From what I've read update 1 will come via Windows Update not though the Windows store. But as Labeeman states, if your not running 8.1 you likely won't be offered update 1.

Windows 8 is great, I love it. It took me a month to get used to, but once I set it up it has been 10 times what Windows 7 was, and Windows 7 was no slouch.

But 8.1 feels like a forced update, it is not the same OS as Windows 8. Windows 8 is still very similar to 7, but 8.1 is VERY different. Most people don't bother with the Metro Screen, so any improvements in that area for 8.1 are worthless to those users - People will generally stick with what works, Windows 8.1 cannot do half of what I require it to do, cos the most useful functions have been totally removed, including Backing up the system.

So, there is a Facebook App update that only works for 8.1? Don't need it, never used it in 8 either.

Why do Mac users update instantly? Because they KNOW they are installing a Desktop OS, and that it is NOT significantly different than their previous OS- Where Mac OS's stay basically the same, only adding functions and features, Windows 8.1 has totally different features, and mostly, mostly MISSING features.

Windows 8.1 is no Windows OS, Windows 8 definitely IS a windows OS - And Microsoft totally abandoned it, leaving users like me who loved it in the dust, with a kick in the arse as "Thank You".

There should have been a Windows 8 Service park. There should BE a service pack - But on ALL of the MS Sites, there is not one word about Windows 8.

Also, we are still buying from the warehouses of Windows 8 machines that did not sell last year. So a new PC Will most likely have Windows 8 on it - Except for HP, who have started making PCs with Windows 7 on them, and my last 2 clients have bought THOSE instead of 8 - And with a 150 dollar discount on all machines with 7 on them, its a high incentive for HP consumers.

I've sent maybe 10 people who were looking for new PCs to HP in the last 2 months.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
People hate change. So what does Microsoft do in its infinite wisdom? Come out with Windows 8 which is is totally different than previous versions of Windows. So then what does Microsoft do? They come out with Windows 8.1 which is very different than Windows 8. Windows 8 continues to sell like garbage so what does Microsoft do? You guessed it! More changes! But do they actually give customers what they've been screaming for, the return of the Windows 7 style desktop and start menu? Nope...

brilliant....

They bring out a new operating system with a hyped up "WOW" factor.
I remember a Kevin Costner film they flooded the advertising industry with once, its awesome they said, go see it they said, he has gills they said ... what was it? OH Yeah, "Water World"

I taste sick in my mouth.

One of the most basic reasons why people did not upgrade to 8.1? Um...it crashed their systems? I do know quite a few that that happened to and I could not figure out why. Remember, we are talking new computers with 8 installed om them. I was able to update with nary a problem and the only reason I did? From experience I have learned that with Microsoft's updates into new OS are baby steps. I am that much closer to Nine and I did not want to leap frog from 8 to 9.

Naw, she has no interest in buying anything online, and doesn't know how to anyway. I do all that stuff including paying the bills etc. If I hadn't set Facebook as her home page she'd be lost on the interwebs. ;) She's a smart woman she's just not computer smart. My daughter setup her Facebook page for her.

From what I've read on various forums, some people hesitated to go to 8.1 because there were rumors that there were problems with it. Personally, I didn't install the upgrade for a while because my internet connection is slow that just downloading it would take 10-12 hours. Finally managed to get and install it, and have had no problems at all.

Although I liked it and think it to be a rather ingenious OS and business direction, the biggest mistake I think MS made was to rush 8 out as fast as they did IMO. It was too drastic a change for many in which they received a heavy backlash from most of the press and some users. It should have been 8.1 to begin with. Then fumbling the ball, they decide to release 8.1 when not really ready, although they worked the bugs out these last 3 or 4 Patch Tuesdays. It seems to be calm sailing now.

So far as 8.1 via the Store vs Windows Update, it is a new edition upgrade, not an update, so therefore via the Store. They'll probably sell new editions this way from now on, although I'm not liking that. My install via the Store went well, but I'd rather have media to fresh install. I think it to be an attempt to cut down on piracy. Not seeing too many having trouble upgrading via the Store any more. Perhaps they got the bugs worked out of that or am I looking at the big picture wrong?

I think a lot of non-techy users either don't know 8.1 is offered through the Store, think that there's a price along with, or are just plain happy with 8.

All in all, the whole 8/8.1 debacle will be gone in the near future. Time heals all they say.

Upgrade fatigue...

I've found that most people I've done upgrades from previous Windows to 8 aren't all for upgrading to 8.1 because of the hassle. It's not bringing too much to the table obviously, it's not supposed to. But because it's mostly focused on WinRT aspects like live tile sizes and app snapping, not so much obvious security and performance or other feature upgrades; it's more meh.

The 8.1.1 update through Windows Update is a good thing as it will just go right ahead as a normal update. But I'm looking forward to the "What did my Windows do, it's different!" posts here soon...

Honestly, the 8.1 update through the Windows Store wasn't a good idea for a couple of reasons. Some people don't even go into the Windows Store to the begin with, Windows didn't give really ANY notification there was a major update available for free to download, and in some instances I've seen, it's something you had to scour on the interwebs to be directed to the Windows Store because it didn't even show ANYTHING about 8.1.

The problem i care aboout is updates and thinggys for the old stuff and softwares. All most 65% of the softwares do not work in 8.1 and especially drivers. just y can't microsoft find a way to fix that? of course, i noe about compability mode but it fails 99.9% of the time. and it doesn't work for drivers!
