Mozilla scraps Metro version of Firefox, citing low int...

After more than two years of work, Mozilla has scrapped its effort to build a Metro-specific version of Firefox for Windows 8, saying that users have shown almost no interest.

Microsoft designed what it previously called the Metro interface for touch-screen devices like tablets and introduced it with Windows 8 along with a version of Internet Explorer designed to run on it. Two years ago, after winning a debate with Microsoft over whether it even could be possible to bring a modern third-party browser to Metro, Mozilla embarked on its Firefox for Metro journey.
Now it's over for now, though Firefox will mothball the code in case it needs to change its mind.

Not surprising! It was about as user friendly as VLC Metro! :p

More likely because almost nobody is interested in Metro. If they are stuck with win8x , they use the desktop and a desktop browser.

Hi there
IMO Mozilla as a browser is only useful for connecting to the TOR network via a little app known as "piratebrowser" (appropriately enough) so when I'm in the UK or France I can still access some very well known "sites" that have been blocked - otherwise almost ANY other browser is better.

Mozilla started going wrong when it took more effort to configure it than a new Airbus plane and had so many add ons it just became total bloatware.

For Windows users I can't actually see what's wrong with IE11 - browsing speed these days is not so much dependent on YOUR browser, but on things like Network speeds, how many users are logged on to the target site and of course the code optimisation (if any) of the target site too.

Cheers

More likely because almost nobody is interested in Metro. If they are stuck with win8x , they use the desktop and a desktop browser.

Their reasons were the dumbest I've ever heard. Dropping support for a beta you had to get to through a workaround to disable IE11 that worked pretty good already, just sounds like they couldn't admit they did a shoddy job and want to concentrate their efforts on their own tablet os.

No usage? As much as I like FF as it's been my only desktop browser for a while now, I've recently dumped it in favor of modern IE because of IE's ease of tab syncing between my Surface 2 and pc. I only use it now if I have to.
The reason I didn't use the beta was because it was horrible. Fact was it didn't work right, it was missing lots of features, it wasn't available for my Surface 2, to use it meant disabling modern IE which works great. It just wasn't an option to use a horrible effort.
And that is why I didn't use it. Not because I wasn't needing or wanting to.
Unfortunately this is a blow, but hardly a loss as IE works pretty good. I guess we just forget they're intentions of bringing about their own tablet os in this whole picture.
The reality is it was never good on Android or IOS either and they can keep their worthless, slow effort.

You don't have to install extra add-ons.
There are only 3 add-ons that I "need" (i.e. Tab Mix Plus, censored & censored).

IMO, they started going wrong when they started doing stuff like:
  • Hiding the controls behind the orange button (which is actually missing options/commands that you can find in the Menu toolbar)
  • Hiding the protocols in the Navigation toolbar
  • Removing features/options from the Library, instead of fixing it
  • Allowing glitches to persist in items like the Spell Checker and Languages selection
  • Wasting time on fluff features like social media integration

That said, FF is the only one of the top 3 that still allows users to customise the interface.

Not surprising honestly.

It's either IE immersive/Desktop, or using a Win32 browser.

That's just the conundrum with Windows 8; apps like ebay and Amazon are really only good for 8 inch or even 10 inch tablets than they are for laptops or desktops because by default you will use the full fleshed website versus the app. Even immersive IE doesn't have a setting for a mobile/desktop website version, but yet here we are, with Newegg and other app versions of websites. That makes little sense to me OTHER than the benefits/nicities of the WinRT environment such as live tiles, pinning items to Start, and other notifications. Some exceptions like youtube, I'd rather use an app.

So it's either make the apps more useful or even better, make your site target the latest version of the modern Interwebs Explorer to take advantage of WinRT type items if possible, like live tiles.

But it's a shame Mozilla didn't have enough support. I like using the modern version of IE simply because of security and performance related things that aren't possible on the Desktop. It's a sandboxed app that doesn't allow things to get out of hand if you go perusing around odd places on the internet.

In the long run, it's going to be interesting to see how WinRT progresses as both Windows and Windows Phone merge closer together code wise.

Just as well they scrapped it, didn't even try that beta because I was afraid it would damage my painstakingly set FF for desktop. For people used to FF and know what to do with it, it's the best and most customizable browser. With bunch of addons it opens in one second flat on my computer. When we are at addons, they be better of incorporating some of the features like saving to MHT, properly displaying PDF, own video downloader and flash player so most of those addons would not be necessary, but then some would call it "bloated". For me at least Modern IE is useless but desktop version runs second closest to FF. Chrome I can't make heads or tails of. I keep menu bar on FF so everything is momentarily accessible.

Nobody is paying for FF, that's the catch. Desktop IE is fine piece of machinery now. Except for relative lack of customization, there's nothing wrong with it.

What I prefer about Firefox is its "ZoomTextOnly" zoom option--it's great. I can blow up the text as much as I like but the images on the page remain their original size. (Nothing is uglier, imo, than magnified bitmap...;))
