New Windows XP data transfer tool & end of support notices

As the end of support for Windows XP on April 8th nears we’re continuing to focus on ensuring customers are aware of the deadline and helping them to migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 8.1. Today we have some news on both those fronts.

To help customers on Windows XP prepare to move to a new PC, we are announcing a free transfer tool that will be available beginning this month. We have partnered with Laplink to provide Windows XP users with a free data migration tool called PCmover Express for Windows XP which copies your files and settings from your Windows XP PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. This tool will copy your files, music, videos, email and user profiles and settings from your old PC to your new device, transferring across your home or work network, and even enables Windows XP users to customize exactly what they want to bring over to their new device.

PCmover Express will be available for download in English starting later this week via WindowsXP.com as well as French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish coming later in March and it will be available in Korean, Chinese, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese after that. But if someone doesn’t want to wait for the tool to be released in their local language, they can access Laplink’s tool in other languages as well via Microsoft’s Download Center.

For Windows XP users wanting to transfer applications from their old computer, Laplink is also making available its software that migrates apps called PCmover Professional at a special price - see here for details.

On March 8th, 2014, Windows XP customers using the Home or Professional editions who have elected to receive updates via Windows Update will receive an official notification on their desktop screen via Windows Update informing them that support for Windows XP will end on April 8th, 2014.

The notification will include a link to our Windows XP End of Support website where Windows XP users can find all the information they need on the end of support for Windows XP and what it means and how they can stay protected against security risks and viruses after April 8th. The notification will reoccur on the 8th of every month unless disabled by the user. For customers unsure of what version of Windows they are using, they can go to AmIRunningXP.com, a website designed to automatically tell if a PC is running on Windows XP or a newer version of Windows like Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. If it detects Windows XP, the website provides guidance on how to upgrade ahead of the April 8th end of support deadline.

This makes sense for those who are not up on installing a new OS. Today I finally broke down and started the update on a ten year old XP computer. Not going to 8/8.1, but to 7 (only because I had a win 7 license that hasn't been used as of yet. . .:D

Okay, then what does this quote taken from the article mean?

Outside of China, Microsoft is dropping support of Windows XP on April 8, meaning that users of the OS will no longer receive security patches meant to fix vulnerabilities in the software.

The way I am interpreting this is the fact that China will still receive Patch Tuesday's for XP while the rest of the world does not. But I wonder if this has anything to do with China moving from XP to Ubuntu. Although, it is an insult that Microsoft will support the cracked copies in China but not the legit copies Worldwide.

Computerworld - Microsoft today said it has not changed the end-of-support policy for Windows XP users in China, and will still cut off those customers -- as it will others around the world -- from security patches after April 8.

For those that feel compelled to leave XP I made a small guide that may come in handy.
XP Migrator Roadmap | PC Help Forum
I don't have an ID on that forum so I'll ask this here... you mention the wbadmin command in your guide, but does that even exist in XP?

The Backup which was built into XP is different to wbadmin I think. The XP Backup was very good in terms of features but creates files in a .BKF format which is hard to read in Windows 8 (I don't think there is an official Microsoft way to do it; at least there wasn't last time I looked).

Thanks for bringing that up.

If you have an XP system, can you check whether wbadmin works. I don't have an XP system. I just assumed that because it was a common command for the servers. But if it does not work, I shall correct my little guide.

As I understand it, XP will get any relevant patches on 8 April. Some commentators have pointed out that until the May 'Patch Tuesday', XP is actually no worse in terms of support than it would have been.

But after the April Patch Tuesday, there will be no more patches.

I'm noticing the free laplink software at the Microsoft site does not include the feature to transfer your programs. I guess you have to pay laplink for that feature and skip the freebie.

Tried opening .VHD files in Win 7 today. I go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, click on Disk Management and let it load then, right click on Disk Management and select Attach VHD.

I created a .VHD file of my Win XP desktop computer from an Acronis 2014 Premium .tib backup. But I'm running into an issue. Win 7 doesn't support .VHD files on 4KB cluster hard drives (> 2 TB), but will open the same file if copied to a 512 byte cluster hard drive (up to 2 TB). Win 8 will support .VHD files on 4 KB cluster hard drives (> 2 TB).

I'm guessing laplink will work with .VHD files, but it does matter what OS you are in and what size hard drive the .VHD file is on.
