Report: Windows 8.1 Update 1 to be released April 8th; MSDN gets it April 2nd

A new claim from noted Microsoft reporter Paul Thurrott states, via unnamed sources, that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be made available to download April 8th for the general public. However, MSDN subscribers will still get access to the final build ahead of that date, although not as early as usual.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 will hit MSDN on April 2, Windows Update on April 8
— Paul Thurrott (@thurrott) February 27, 2014

According to a message on his Twitter account, Thurrott says that MSDN users will be able to access Update 1 on April 2nd, less than a week before the final build will be launched. Usually, MSDN subscribers can get new Windows builds several weeks ahead of their general availability date.

Same day as they remove support for XP. Is that a coincident?

What would be your strategy? Make Windows 7.5 with no touch? If we were stuck on a desktop OS in 2014, MS would be nowhere right now. They wouldn't have sold nearly 200 mil licenses of 7.5. They wouldn't have OEM's producing all the awesome Bay Trail tabs coming into play right now. They would simply be MS stuck in 2009. Just like Apple, nothing is happening.

People like to complain that they have more options. I'd like to see what would have happened if NOTHING happened since W8. I'm sure most upset with their options would like this scenario. I sure as hell wouldn't.

HELL NO! I'll take my Modern UI on my tablet.

And with the MS/Nokia deal that looks to close this month this will be an exciting year. :)

Of course ms needs a mobile\touch os, just a matter of how many (more) icebergs they manage to hit on the way there. And they're in the strange situation of not only competing with some universally established offerings from android\google\apple, ms now has to try to kill their own products (xp\w7) as well.

Quite true, 4wd. Since day one, Microsoft has always been playing "catch-up". And because they are always playing catch-up, we do suffer for their games, ie buggy products and bad releases.

I agree that MS is slow. While they play catch up, to me there is nothing in the other camps to offer a one, unified os goal that MS is working towards.

I have not seen or heard of either Goog or Apple to offer the same. Neither of the them are promoting this and they have nothing to offer me if I can't use the same apps and integrated syncing with my pc/tablet/phone. Of course I could use the other two with a separate platform/ecosystem, but why? I'd rather have one, and if that means I have to wait a bit, no problem. Much more promising MS's way than the other.

They could have released a new desktop os. A few under the hoods incremental improvements, one or two nice features, like refresh. That is what a laptop buyer is looking for of course. There would have been quite a few who used to buy windows notebooks still switching to other simple devices - but they never needed windows in the first place. They bought the cheap laptops/netsbooks because that was all there was.

Yes, of course sales would have been better. But MS is looking for something else.

Ok. I’ll play your with your Titanic analogy. Remember, the Titanic would have survived had the gash been not so long as to open so many hull compartments.

Admittedly MS Titanic 8 hit an iceberg, but the gash opened but a few compartments and the ship listed. They hurriedly got it back to dry dock for repairs. Afterwards to save face they rechristened it MS Titanic 8.1. All was performed in an expedient amount of time and reissued free tickets. Instead of bolting down all the deck chairs, they left some lose so some passengers are able to rearrange some to their liking. More will stay onboard to enjoy the cruise. Full steam ahead for smooth sailing. :D

OUR desktop, just as “(xp\w7)”, continues on just as always. It’s not going anywhere any time soon. Not until we reach the Jetsons’ time period anyway.

After the deal with Nokia is closed, they’ll get RT to run on the phone also. They are probably writing code to do so already. I bet all this was in the plan long before 8 was released.

When the general public finds out that an OS will run across all devices and sync their data the other two won't stand a chance to grow.

BTW, can you say Motorola? How about Apple bailout? :D

Plus, I can't multitask or watch Flash tv, have a stand or lightweight keyboard on their tablet, or even purchase a decently sized screen for a phone.

Android is much the same minus the phone screen size. Then, there's the limitations of Chrome OS, why bother?

Until someone comes up with something better unified to offer, it's MS all the way.

I think MS have learned now, if you are going to boil frogs - you have to get the temperature right.

I will be interested to see if they manage it.
