Windows 7 Now Installed on Half of PCs As Window 8.1’s....

Microsoft has invested millions of dollars to make Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 successful, but statistics provided every month by third-party research firms across the world point to only minor market share gains.

Figures posted by StatCounter for the month of February 2014 indicate that Windows 7 is now powering more than half of desktop computers worldwide, while Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 recorded only a slight increase in the last month.

I'm not surprised, it is IMHO, one of Microsoft's all time best operating systems.

I'm not surprised, it is IMHO, one of Microsoft's all time best operating systems.

And therein lies the rub. Win 8/8.1, when used with a third party enhancement like Classic Shell, is every bit as good as 7 was. Why any company would purposely shoot themselves in the foot like ms did with metro simply boggles the mind.

IMHO 8.1 is great without any third party start menu. I understand many people don't share that view but for me 8.1 works just fine without adding a start menu to the mix. On the other side of the coin, if my TechNet keys expired tomorrow, it wouldn't bother me all that much to go back to Windows 7 on the PC's effected. I'd miss 8 but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Windows 8.1 is a good, but IMHO ugly, OS. I really miss the look from Windows 7. Now after about 1½ year, I still don't like the very flat "windows 98" windows, controllers aso. I would like to have a "classic shell" and a "aero 3D'ish shell" as tweakbar as in windows 7. Then I could get my eyecandy back, and people that want the flat classic, could get that.

My sentiments pretty much echo this. I think Win 7 & Win 8/8.1 are both fine and switch back and forth between the 2 on a daily basis. It wouldn't bother me at all if I had to choose one over the other since both are are great OSes.

#7 Nope. Classic shell does NOT change the window-border, nor does it change the Min,Max,Close buttons in top right corner or give the window rounded corners. It DOES add a nice Startmenu, but that is not what I was writing about.
What I miss is a skin or a theme, that makes the desktop and windows looks like in win7 with full eyecandy enabled.

No Idea what you mean buy Tweakbar? Quick launch still works in 8.1 This package gives you the Gadgets back I really like their ClipBoarder gadget. Its actually a Vista Gadget tool Bar works just like a win 7 set up.
The only thing I don't like is IE 11 crashes all the time web pages fail to load sucks I guess MS will get is settled out soon.

Ok looked up tweakbar, have you tried running it win 8.1? Just a quick look I don't see any reason it won't run?
Through control panel/personalization you can load any theme you want its no different than win 7

Not too many will argue that 7 is a rock solid tower PC OS. No doubt about it. Some even run it on a tablet. But, MS wouldn’t have survived creating another one. The tower PC market has flat lined and not too shortly in the future will decline all the more why with the craze of touch mobile devices. 7 tablets weren't a big seller either.

MS pulled a real boner releasing 8 like they did. Sure started a whole lot of bad press and soar feelings toward it. I think in time when the dust clears 8.1 will prove itself to be a good seller.

Bogdan Popa is actually a great writer. He’s a master at deception and a real twistappel in his writings even though he’s a big MS and Windows fan. I can just hear his boss tell him > “Write anything you’d like. Just don’t give MS an inch.”

Technically they’re different OS versions, but one must consider adding them together for a presentation such as this because they both represent the change of the new MS direction. To be considered like fraternal twins so to speak. Combined they would equal 10.91%, which would beat out Mac OS X. 10.91% is not the best, but not the worst either. Drastic change is always slow go.

Linux is still missing from the stats, which means that, although so many people said that they are migrating from Windows XP to the open-source platform, its market share remains low.

Hmmmm. Doesn’t look good you dabblers in distros, eh?

What happened to the ¼ of 1% gain for January he boasted of in his last article to spread Softpedia’s FUD?

Windows XP lost only a few users in February and now has a market share of 17.07 percent, which is just another indication that Microsoft’s ancient OS version won’t be dead by April.

Despite Imminent Retirement, More Users Move to Windows XP

Wonder how much XP will drop and 7/8.1 will increase in the next couple of months when the clock stops ticking for the old dino? Ultimately it really doesn’t matter. MS gains either way.

Yes, I know I can load themes as in win7, but there are so much lesser options to change, so it is not possible to get a "win7" look, I think. See this picture, look at the rounded corners, look at the "Close button" on top right corner, 3D-shadow under the window, this is windows 7

Now look at this picture. It is Windows 8.1 with classic shell installed, sharp corners, flat and ugly buttons in top right corner, same massive color in windowsborder overall:

Ugly is one way of putting it. Unwelcoming is another.

I should think the appearance is the least of your worries.

Perhaps here in the US, where Microsoft has a very powerful lobby effort it does not, to some eyes look good. Although I do know of schools in my state that are turning to Linux because of the money saved by not having licensing fees. Parts of Germany are going Linux (giving away free cd's of Ubuntu) because they do not want all the working XP computers filling up landfills. China has gone Ubuntu and is continuing to grow. England, from their testing, is stating that Ubuntu is more secure for phones, tablets and computers than Windows 8. It has really been only the last few years that Linux has truly become so easy to use, right out of the box.

But as the numbers show, Windows 8 is not going were Microsoft thought it was going to go. The people are speaking.

Well, if you sit in front of the computer all day, would you not like it to be pleasing to your eye? Now although I do have a soft spot for PC-DOS's C prompt, I know others who do not. It is the same here. And really, at this stage of the game, should you not be able to design your desk top the way you want?

Yes, I understand many think it is ugly.

The phrase "least of your worries" means there is a lot more to worry about. I.E. there are more serious problems with it than just the way it looks.

I am not so confident of the Linux desktop effect suddenly leaping into the stratosphere. It certainly has advantages, and of course it would be good for humanity to have viable alternatives, particularly if they are open source.

I don't see it happening quickly, though.

Two different programs there? you can download dozens or maybe hundreds with all the custom themes out there. I'm not promoting 8.1 its the latest and I have it on my notebook. I have been able with a little help from my friends here and elsewhere to have just about everything I had with windows 7, I have 3 other computers I work with daily two running win 7, one with a touch screen and win 8. my notebook 8.1 other than the touch screen there all the same to me.

Yes, it is 2 different programs, but it is NOT the programs themselfs I writing about, but the window-border and buttons! It is NOT possible to get a Windows 7 border/button look in Windows 8/8.1.

I like windows 8.1 with classic shell, but also with a link to the start screen by moving mouse all the way into the corner. It trumps windows 7 IMHO, and is close to how the OS should have been released originally. I like both options, and have gotten pretty dang good at getting around. For my most used applications, start screen and start menu are about the same And I often prefer start screen. For less used, I typically prefer start menu still. I still run 7 on my work computer, and I miss parts of 8 when working on it.
