Microsoft: More than 200 million Windows 8 licenses sold

It's been a while since Microsoft execs shared an official count of licenses of Windows 8 sold. Last time we got a tally was in May 2013, when the Softies said the company had sold more than 100 million licenses.
On February 13, however, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Marketing Tami Reller, casually dropped an updated figure of 200 million Windows 8 licenses sold. Reller made that remark during an appearance at the Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet Conference. (I listened to a live Webcast.)
Microsoft's silence since last May about Windows 8's sales rate has been taken by many as proof that the company isn't selling Windows 8 as quickly as it had hoped and expected.

Read this early today. It is good to see MS finally getting somewhere with Windows 8/8.1. With 9 just around the corner though it makes one wonder id the up coming update is all that necessary. . .(just a thought).

I was sold several Windows 8 computers. They were delivered with Windows 7 installed. What I purchased shows on the invoice as a Windows 8 computer, but it was already downgraded (upgraded really ;) ) to Windows 7.

I don't think Microsoft should be proud in any way of those numbers or try to spin this as something that it is not.

Those "upgrades" do happen, but their numbers are still not significant to the whole sales.

It's logic that some of us do want to remain on 7 for multiple reasons but most of the new machines do get W8 and Average Joe who doesn't know about upgrading/downgrading will use the computer as is, with factory settings (and programs). :)

I am curious about several things;

1. How many of those copies are sitting on store shelves

2. How many are Pro and how many are RT

3. How many of the Pro versions are stock install, not running some form of third party apps that allow the Windows 7 type interface.

and lastly,

4. Why is there an 8.1.1 update, if they are already working on a Windows 9, due out in April of 2015 ?

Along these same lines recently published by PC Mag:

Microsoft's Windows 8 has reached a milestone 200 million sales, but continues to lag behind its predecessor.

Tami Reller, Microsoft's executive vice president of marketing, made the announcement during Thursday's Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet Conference, the company's first mention of Windows 8 sales rates since May.

"We surpassed 200 million licenses now on Windows 8, which is pretty stunning," she said, adding that while the platform has received a lot of traction, there is still a lot more work to do.

The numbers are misleading at the very least. I purchased a laptop years ago and the only OS choice was Vista. When the laptop arrived I immediately wiped the HDD and installed XP. I'm certain I'm not the only person to do that. Many people now are not given a choice of OS, and when their Win8 PC arrives they install Win7 or something else.

The point in this is while 200 million licenses may have been sold, not many of them are actually being used. Maybe half at most? My laptop never once ran Vista, and that's what it was built for. The Windows Vista sticker is still on the palm rest to this day.

Probably me. Slower to catch on since I'm an old guy now and cheap too. Figured I had better grab that deal while I could and I'm glad I did because I couldn't see paying what they want for it now.

If you are going to buy thing , fifteen bucks is a lot less painful than whatever they are asking now. Quite a few of them going unused I expect, lying at the back of a drawer like some unwanted gift from a doddery aunt.

Actually for uses, $14.99 and $5 for Start8, I have it set up to fit me pretty well. I stay in the desktop most of the time but I do have a few programs on the Modern side I use as well. I pretty much started with computers from the DOS age. although I did have an Osborne (remember those?) before that. I try to stay open, but as I said, I've adapted it for my use, other users mileage may vary.

Microsoft pocketed the money for 200 million licensees regardless if they are setting on some OEM's or other companies shelves. It really only matters to those who for some reason just can't get past the idea of Microsoft making money from Windows 8.
