How can Microsoft keep Windows relevant? We asked journalists, technologists, and former Microsoft employees that simple question, and got an array of answers.

I think Mary Jo Foley is right that Microsoft needs
to be unafraid of introducing a whole new operating system at some point. At some point, in the not-too-distant future, Windows is going to need to be supplanted by “the next big thing.”
The problem of backward compatibility is inherent with such a change. I'm sure you all saw the same complaints I did from consumers about Vista compatibility issues. The complaints have declined with Windows 7 most likely because the old hardware that wasn't compatible with Vista has been replaced with new.
I think seeing any big changes will depend upon how important the corporate market is to Microsoft.
