Few Users Installed Windows 8/8.1 in January 2014

It’s February 1, so it’s the time for another batch of statistics provided by Net Applications. Unfortunately for Microsoft’s modern operating system, they are barely increasing their market share, so while Windows 8.1 managed to boost its number of users, Windows 8 continued the decline.

At this point, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are holding a combined market share of 10.58 percent, which represents only a minor boost as compared to figures recorded last month.

The rest here:Few Users Installed Windows 8/8.1 in January 2014

Not surprising, January isn't a month of much activity. The next bout will most likely occur in the spring when tax returns come in, fall, and then the holidays.

Not really, the months of January and part of February are typically the slowest months of the retail year. They'll have some sales to get people buying, but those two months are off the tail end of the Christmas season. Everyone just spent a lot of time and money and choose to wait until tax returns to come in and buy things again. Generally, March in retail the soonest when activity picks back up.

Yeah but they are comparing Windows 8 to the release of Vista and 7. Vista and 7 did not have to
compete against tablets like Windows 8 does. I think if the tablets of today were out when
Vista and 7 were released, their numbers would not be where they are, either.

I disagree. In terms of the tablet world, win8 is irrelevant. Nobody cares about it in a universe dominated by apple and android. 8's problems exist because they pissed all over their base... and their base pissed right back. It's a lesson that was hard won for them, and if there's anybody left there with a freakin clue, they will learn from it.

Try to fool us again, however, would be a mistake.

Windows 8 in the tablet space isn't even really understood by anyone. The vast majority of PCs still are laptops, OEMs are starting to really emphasize tablets now. It'll happen, but as usual, at snail pace.

Microsoft will still continue to push for tablets and the PC in general whether it's liked by you or anyone else. If those Update 1 screenshots are correct, they're still going to push for WinRT and the Windows Store and make it easier to go from a laptop to a tablet and so on and so forth.

Yea yea, your schtick is getting very tiresome. "it's misunderstood, people aren't smart enough, too stupid, too lazy etc etc"

Enough. People are not the problem... ms's pathetic metro interface is the ONLY damn problem, and your constant put downs of tifkam opponents will NEVER change that.

Coke, they can push as much as they want. Fact is that people are not buying. If they are smart, they analyse the reasons and correct the errors. Right now they are marching into the wrong direction.

And in the tablet market they are lost anyway because they have no tablet typical applications and not even the hardware facilities like GPS.

YOUR shtick is getting tiresome. If it's Microsoft's fault they did wrong, the growth of Windows 8/8.1 and even Windows Phone would reflect that.

But ten percent over one year for an operating system that apparently "Microsoft did wrong" with doesn't sound like it's a problem.

Either way, it doesn't matter what you think about the "metro interface" because that's a BROAD topic to cover. The metro interface isn't the Start Screen. But then again, it's not like opponents of it even care to think what even means...

Also, Windows RT tablets like the Nokia Lumia 2520 have GPS. Those are the typical tablets that would be used for such, Intel and AMD based tablets might not be considered so much as navigation devices but that's more perception than anything.

For desktops and laptops this number won't go up much. In 2015 W9 comes out and no one will install Vista, ah I mean W8 then.

Any growth of W8 will come from tablets, but that market get saturated and seem quite locked in by Apple and Android.

It is not 1 year. It has been 18 months since 8 is out and the 10% are dismal indeed. I think Rikkins is right. M$ srewed it up big time. And that cannot be repeated often enough.

Those thingies are just poor tablets with hardly any tablet applications. I am sure some people will buy them for specific purposes (like I did with the Asus Transformer because it was the best price/performer as 10" laptop). But we won't use it as a tablet but as a laptop that is easy to haul around. For tablet use I have my Nexus 7.

For tablet applications look into the Google Playstore. There you find them, not in the MS store.

It took 10 months for W8 to exceed Vista's uptake rate (one of the most despised operating systems ever released).
Windows 8 surpasses Vista's uptake rate -- 10 months after launch - Computerworld

Apparently, comparing the performance of MS' latest product to their previous products is invalid.

When it was being compared to Vista (market share) W8 fans screamed, "you can't compare it to Vista."
Now the W8 fans scream, "you can't compare it to Windows 7."

According to W8 fans, it is only valid to compare W8's market performance as follows:
  • W8 vs OS X
  • W8 vs Linux Distros
  • W8 vs W8
