Super-fast Wi-Fi coming: 802.11ac-2013

It took a while, but 802.11ac Wi-Fi, with its theoretical maximum of 1.3 Gigabit per second (Gbps) devices, finally started showing up in the summer of 2013. That's fast, but faster is on its way. 802.11ac-2013 will break existing Wi-Fi speed-records with a screaming 7 Gbps of data in the 5GHz range....

.....That all sounds good, but the big question is: When will companies actually start shipping 802.11ac-2013 gear? No one is saying yet. I expect the usual suspects -- Cisco, Linksys, D-Link, and Juniper -- will start shipping early adopter gear by the 3rd quarter of 2014 and mass production runs will appear in time for the 2014 holiday season.

I would think that any type of wired GB connection would create a bottle neck for this new wireless.

I don't see how it can work if they plan on connecting the access points using Ethernet cable which will be limited to GB speeds.

Seems like you would need a fiber optic connection and fiber optic enabled router and A/P's to really make this work.

Good point, Cat-6 and 7 are still only rated at 1Ghz. What does that work out to in GB? Would it be 8x? I'm confused.......again. :think:

I believe they are designing the AP's with 2 Ethernet ports to handle the load. Here is an older article by the author with more insite of the drawbacks.

Sounds good in theory anyway. It will be interesting to see how it holds up in real use. I wonder how tolerant it will be to slower devices like a Wireless G printer? If everything ends up running at the speed of the slowest device its could end up being a big disappointment.
