I'm not getting the big hype about USB3 so its faster but you can expect that from a newer version but is that all its really about?

It is a lot faster than USB2 - in theory. But in real life it seems to be about 3 times the USB2 speed (for traditional spinning disks). But it is a good attachment for devices that will still be invented and are faster than our current devices.

Some USB 3.0 externals are starting to arrive .. And there's PCI cards that can read USB 3.0.
For the HDDs that are currently available ....
It looks like the USB 3.0 speed is about the same as a HDD connected to SATA 3Gb/s.
But ... There's the new SATA 6Gb/s Peripherals that are starting to be available now.

You could get a 6GB SSD from Crucial - if you have at least US$ 450 lying around.
