Windows 8 screenshots of build 8220 leak, new info surfaces

Microsoft is getting close to the beta launch of Windows 8 and a few new screenshots of one of the latest builds has leaked. The screenshots have been independently confirmed by Canouna and show the name “Consumer Preview” which indicates previous rumors that the beta tag would be dropped; images are from PC Beta.com

Another big change is that you will notice the start orb is now gone. This is another big change that will be in the Consumer Preview and shows, again, how Windows 8 will break from the mold of previous versions of windows.

It amazes me that there havent been more leaks this time around. Unless I misremember, I couldve swore we had a leak of the Win 7 Beta early along with a bunch of other leaks along the way. I guess MS has really cracked down this time around..... unfortunately

Windows 8 beta screenshots continue to be released on the Internet as we await word on when Microsoft will finally and officially launch the "consumer preview" of its next PC operating system. Today the reliable Windows 8 beta information site Winunleaked.tk has released a number of new screenshots from the 8220 beta build along with some more information about the build's features.

As we have reported before this build of Windows 8 no longer has a "Start" button, which has already caused a ton of comments among long time Windows users. Winunleaked.tk gives a list of the new features in the build, some of which have been revealed before:

The recycle bin icon is a bit retro not metro. :)

This is intense! I have no idea why the Start flag still remains on the Charms Bar, but not where a Start button should be at. I don't like the current Start button, that just makes a contrasting distinction from Metro and Desktop, I'd rather have them mesh together well than to be segregated out. I do enjoy the new Metro iconography in Desktop! YES! I think they're quite cool...but that recycle bin is ridiculous, it is retro, not metro. Hmm, I wonder if the rest of Windows Explorer will get the Metro icon treatment. Metro folders? I don't even know what they'll look like, but I bet it shall be cool...ooooohhh. :)

I read that performance is even better than Windows 7 SP1, I have to try this because that is just cool. I do like the progress of the Start Screen and all, but oh man, I'm hating that new Start button. Why can't Microsoft keep the Start flag where it should and maybe have a metro Start flag they have in that Charms bar? That is WAY nicer looker than the current. Blerg!

I also really wonder if Microsoft designed Windows 8 to adapt settings to either a desktop or tablet. From the screenshots, it looks like it's being ran on a tablet. I'd like to see Windows 8 to have adaptive settings so it doesn't have overly large text and other oddities on a desktop.

I feel ouch about the fact the Start button might be gone. It's one thing to evolve a feature of Windows, but to take the whole branding that makes Windows, Windows; that is something else. The one thing I've grown up with using Windows was the Start flag and the branding that Windows is based on. I mean, in Windows 95, the start menu was something that was used to literally start something, whether it be a game or a spreadsheet. The Start Screen does too and makes it your initial focus. If that is replaced with a 'hot corner', it literally might kill the Windows brand to me. I think Microsoft needs to be proud of their brand and continue it on to the future, and shove it away for something else.
