Windows 8 Dev Build Users Drop Significantly, Is It An Omen?

Ruh-roh: could the sky already be falling on Windows 8? Nope, not yet, but that’s what a report by ad network Chitika seems to insinuate. Since ads are obviously based on metrics, Chitika has been keeping tally on the number of impressions it receives from users running the Windows 8 Developer Preview, and the company claims that number has dropped dramatically since the Dev Build launched in late September. OH NOES! But does the drop in Dev Build users really matter?

Who knows!! I personally do not like anything much in Win8 and my foray with the Dev Build ended very quickly but I cannot really say if this is a "poll" with any significance. My view is that Win8 would be a disaster. What may work on a phone (the Metro interface), may be an absolute disaster on a larger screen. I find Win8 very visually and user unappealing. Others may have other opinions. But there is clamor for the beta, not that I can see. In fact, most of "reverse" enthusiasm is by the haters of Metro. Unless the beta has ushered some essential changes, I foresee that its reception would be also very tepid.

Yes. I think I mentioned the possibility in an earlier post. Once you have explored the very limited options/differences, in the Metro interface, there is little in Windows 8, that has not, already, been discussed in its almost identical cousin - Windows 7. Most of the curious have quickly discovered this.
Already covered, I guess, but using Windows 8 in the "non-metro" mode, I did find it seemed to have all round improved performance, but at this stage, it could go either way when MS add on a few more trinkets.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

hi there

it's normal as people have posted. We've done as much testing as we can, the product expires in a few weeks so there isn't a lot of point investing loads of time anymore. When the beta or next version is released things will start all over again.

cheers

That pretty much says it for me too. I find it a very frustrating experience on a desktop PC that doesn't have a touch screen. lol, I had to Google how to find the bloody shut down button. Killing the metro UI just makes it windows 7 with a bunch of stuff thats missing or doesn't work. My first go around was short lived, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment as I just installed it again on my spare PC. I really wish I had a tablet or touch screen to test it on but we'll see how it goes this time around.

It would really be a waste of time to spend a lot of time on a preview that goes byby soon:confused:....er....wait a minute....I resemble that remark:geek:

Seeing that the limited time offer would soon be coming to an end I thought I would give it another try while I could. I didn't give it much of a go the first time so I thought I would try and give Windows 8 a fair shack and see if things got easier the more I used it. Its only been a couple of days so the verdict is still out for me. Its installed on my backup rig made out of spare parts, lol it doesn't even have a case yet. Its usable though so its something to play around with.

After the initial explorations I have not fired it up since 4 weeks. There was little more to explore and trying some serious work seems to be a waste of time on an Alpha version. I will get back on it when the beta comes out. Hopefully they will make it easier to get around this Metro.

The preview simply refused to install on the 64bit 7 host here and I never got to unplug it to install outright on the second drive set up for testing being that it was mainly a developers release to begin with. The beta on the other hand will have a place when the time comes for a good lookover of what MS has in mind.

In the meantime if you want to see how a few things planned for 8 will look like on 7 review the article just posted on how to add the Mosaic look and Better Explorer on Windows 7 without fuss Have a couple of screens here for the Better Explorer that right on as a second explorer option.

Here's the full view.

Better Explorer 1.jpg

Now compared side by side with the default Windows Explorer for a good comparison.
