Hi there
seemed to work fine (Windows 8.1 ) -- also a load of Office 2010 updates too --- BTW after this update I was able to install the additional display language packs that weren't available previously (apart from the original additional 36 languages via the language pack ISO from technet) - whether this is just "co-incidence" or has something to do with the updates I just don't know.

So for all those wanting weird languages like Basque, Welsh etc on Windows 8.1 -- all are now available. Surprised Ms didn't make an availability announcement on this. Just add from the Language Icon on the control panel (Only PRO and ENTERPRISE versions only I'm afraid though).

For people afraid to install the updates - why don't you just BACKUP your system first (max time 20 mins - especially if you've separated the OS and your data - on an SSD can be as short as 5 - 7 mins) or test in a VM. Then if it doesn't work either delete the VM or just restore your previous system. ...."SEEEEMPLES.......".

Cheers
jimbo

KB2887595 Microsoft Update Fails to Install on Windows 8.1

Microsoft has released eight security bulletins as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout, but it turns out that one of the updates is causing problems on a number of Windows 8.1 computers.

According to some posts on the company’s Community forums, the KB2887595 update fails to install on machines running the new Windows 8.1 operating system, even though everything seems to be working just fine once the download comes to an end.

Affected users are reporting that after reboot, they are provided with an error reading “Failure configure Windows Updates. Undoing changes.”

“I have had trouble on 2 Windows 8.1 x64 installations. One of them is a surface pro, which updated after about 10 attempts (having to fixit in between each attempt). On the other PC this update just won't install - it fails with error 80070057. I have run fixit multiple times, manually stopped the windows update service and deleted all entries in SoftwareDistribution and DataStore then restarted the service,” another user detailed the issues experienced on his computers.

Microsoft hasn’t yet commented on this problem, so it’s a bit too early to tell whether it’s just another botched update or only a compatibility glitch experienced on a limited number of computers.

History shows that Microsoft has made releasing botched updates quite a common practice, with many of the bulletins released in the last few months causing lots of problems on Windows computers.

I had a heck of a time with this update. After installing the 10 or so additional updates I got and doing a restart as recommended this sucker was still there on my update list. I tried installing and restarting several more times before it actually finished. Every time I would try a shut down I would get that "install updates and shut down" notice. I think it took 3 or 4 attempts for it to finally finish installing.

Hello Gavan,

I had that happen on the laptop. It did an Automatic Repair at boot a couple of times after that with a restart inbetween each time, then it finally finished installing the updates and Windows 8.1 started normally again.
