Windows Loses Some Users Despite the Arrival of Windows8.1

Microsoft launched 2 operating system versions in the last 12 months, but this hasn’t stopped the overall market share of its platform from losing a few points every 30 days.

According to market researcher Net Applications, Windows now stands at 90.66 percent, while Mac OS X comes second with 7.73 percent. Linux is third with only 1.61 percent.

The difference between Windows and the other platforms is huge, but Microsoft’s operating system keeps losing points and this isn’t at all a good thing.

Only last month Windows declined from 90.81 percent to 90.66 percent, with the trend clearly showing a dropping market share for what it remains the number one operating system for desktop computers.

Windows started the year with a share of 91.71 percent, but gradually lost points as more users made the switch to other platforms.

Yes, it isn't good news for MS. They might be able to stem the bleeding if they really have understood the situation. If Paul Thurrotts report is accurate, it seems they might finally be listening to someone who knows what they are taking about. There is no mention of price points there, but I saw it mentioned elsewhere. Does that signal the necessary change in attitude?

I would guess that the loss of a few percent market share is not critical to Microsoft - they know that when they get the formula right, the lost sheep will return to the fold.

What worries Microsoft more, is the static user base that they don't get revenue from - people and businesses who only use OEM OS and software that came with their PCs, and don't want to upgrade, only replacing their machines at the very end of their lives with another OEM machine. Businesses that still use the same old, but licensed Microsoft Office products on every generation of new PCs they buy.

In many ways these customers are as much of a drain on Microsoft as straightforward piracy is.

No wonder Microsoft would like to lease its products, and distribute everything electronically.

And this is still the crux of the whole issue...

"And still, this doesn’t stop users and analysts alike from criticizing Redmond for its strategy of putting touch ahead of the traditional way of working on a computer and involving a mouse and a keyboard.

In fact, this has been one of the most criticized aspects of the new Windows 8 platform, with Microsoft blasted with every single occasion by users who felt like being left of the company’s operating system lineup due to the plethora of touch-oriented features."

But how many of these are people who took one look, or a 5 min (or less) test drive and came to that totally inaccurate conclusion?

I apologize for being a "pirate". I'm a retired, home computer user who maintains a few websites for car clubs and develop some Excel spread sheets for record keeping and personal data analysis. I love MS products but cannot justify updating with every new version that comes along. My present computer is 3 years old, my wife's is 5 years old. We're going to just keep on keeping on.

I am kind of thinking of downgrading too now. I had to buy Start8 to actually make Windows 8/8.1 useful. I have not paid for Windows 8 nor Windows 8.1 because my University provides upgrades for free but if I were an actual customer, I would never buy Windows 8 because there are no dramatic features that stand out, especially on the desktop side. For example, why does Windows Explorer not have tabs? Why is there no way to see all my opened program windows at once? Why is there no virtual desktops? Why can't the live tiles be gadgets on the desktop? The list goes on and on.

Who needs Windows or OS X for games when you have game consoles? iPhone, iPad, PS4 and Xbox One will satisfy your gaming needs and entertainment.

The only downside that I have with OS X is that Microsoft never made a native OneNote app. Once they make a native OneNote app (maybe 2014), I will gladly erase Windows from my PC and replace it with OS X. I currently have a dualboot system.

Have your clients tried Classic Shell and Modern Mix? With those two installed, for all practical purposes, you have a Windows 7 computer with a key that lets you play with some "metro" style programs. I don't hit that key as much as once a week, there's little there that interests me, but it doesn't get in the way of doing everything in pretty much the "Windows 7 way".

"wife's" is known as the possessive form of the noun "wife". It means "the computer used by my wife is 5 years old". Perhaps you write political ads with words taken out of context :)

It is entirely possible win7 and even earlier also have backdoors for the NSA. At least they don't contain the other stuff as well.

Some people think they can avoid some of it, perhaps they can, for the moment. It is only a matter of time before the masses get hooked in, and the few dissenters will have very little left to use.

I kind of miss the Aero look. It looked more professional than this flat half baked theme. Intel no longer supports my IGPU on Windows 8 and I'm forced to use Microsoft's in-house drivers of whatever the hell they told me. Sometimes I get a blue screen randomly after waking from sleep which is so annoying. I still cant get over the fact that I had to pay to make it useful. Geez lol

That's my point. The touch Oriented Features are not anti-Mouse/Keyboard. They work just fine.

The problem is, it's different. And people are resistant to change in these areas.

For the other posters....
Again, it is not inaccurate to state that most people who harp on these changes haven't given much thought into how to use it.
It's not what I am used to, therefore it sucks. Much like going from Office2003 to 2007 or 2010, the Ribbon bar does in fact make the software a lot more useful and friendly. As it does in Explorer.

As for the differences between 7 and 8, there are a lot of improvements.
Many are unseen, Speed and stability are not at all minor changes.

Many of the things that one person said they wanted, will be hard pressed to get them incorporated.
Tabbed Explorer, Virtual Desktops, etc.
MS could barely include a web browser without getting sued, much less Anti-Virus. Please, stop with the fud.

As for the NSA, I really hate to say this, cause I hate the saying "I have nothing to hide, so I don't care" it's a completely moronic statement. But, people's entire lives are posted on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN and other places that the NSA doesn't need access to your PC to find out all about people, they Willingly and Freely give it up daily, by the minute. Literally, by the minute, daily.
