ARM-Based Windows 8 Tablets Could Lose Desktop

According to Microsoft-watcher Paul Thurrott, Microsoft may be working toward a future where Windows 8 tablets ship without the Windows desktop. Users of these ARM-based devices would be limited to the Metro interface. This would be a significant departure from Redmond’s previous “no compromises” strategy that would have provided users both operating environments on ARM systems.

Sure, who needs the desktop on a tablet. And it better be cheap. The opponent is not the iPad but the Kindle Fire.

Wouldn't a desktop be difficult to use an a tablet? I don't have one so don't know.

It was mentioned by MS months ago that tablets would would not have the desktop, not even the binaries.
Also mentioned, PCs will have the option of using Metro or a Desktop.

This could change, time will tell.

I use an iPad for work, and it's desktop holds the icons to the most used applications (not mine in picture)

It's just like any PC in that respect. A Guy

Hmm, this might help reinforce the dominance of the Desktop in general. Many people, especially here, rag on tablets being impotent beings with desktops being superior beings. Although a Windows tablet is great, having it without a desktop could prove to be problem on the other hand. I don't know, part of me thinks this is a good idea, but I bet having that will come across to the average nincompoop consumer as confusing...

That looks similar, basically, to Metro. (I have seen/used ipad before... briefly)

By desktop I mean like the Win7 desktop, start button, task bar, etc.
The apps list is too small to use on a small touch screen, maybe with a pen.
The icons shown above and Metro would seem to be much easier to navigate on a smaller device.

I don't think anyone with a tablet would even want a standard desktop, Win7 style.
