Microsoft Brings Ads in Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 is now available for all users worldwide, either as an update or as a separate download, with Microsoft encouraging everyone to deploy it as soon as possible.

While Windows 8.1 indeed comes with lots of improvements, Redmond is also working on some new features, some of which are based on the existing capabilities of the operating system.

For example, Microsoft announced that as part of its new ad experience, it would also integrate advertisements in the Bing Smart Search feature included in Windows 8.1

“As my colleague David Pann shared over the summer now in Windows 8.1, with one search, consumers can look for information across the web, device, apps and cloud. Bing Ads are an integral part of this experience and will help people find relevant information to help them get things done,” Microsoft’s Greg Nelson said in a post.

It should be noted, you can turn this off. Along with the Bing Search itself.

Do you really think enterprise customers would put up with it if you couldn't? They are the ones MS listens to.

The voice of the mighty dollar is much louder than any customer, regardless of who that customer may be.

Indeed

Just like the Start Menu hack in W8DP.
They ripped the code out as soon as they discovered that most people were "killing" Metro.

It was obvious that MS planned to do this (especially once they killed the Start Menu).

Do you really think enterprise customers would put up with it if you couldn't? They are the ones MS listens to.

Just like MS listened to the complaints before W8 was released?

How many businesses are running W8 (or even planning to implement it)?

We're not talking about a hack. We're talking about a supported, in full view setting in the control panel.

Please compare apples to apples.

That's a function of the fact most businesses just transitioned to Windows 7, and it still has a 5 year support lifecycle. Within the next 2-3 years they're going to start transitioning to whatever is current at that time, and if it's filled with advertising, without a way to shut it off via group policy, they're not going to be happy.

Right now, business doesn't care about Windows 8 because they've already standardized on Windows 7. Microsoft knows this, and that's why Windows 8 is so consumer focused.

You can't argue that changing the values of MS' Registry keys is unsupported, as MS often suggests the very same techniques to solve various issues.

It was MS' Start Menu code (no 3rd party code was required) and MS removed it.

MS code removed/modified by MS in W8 (some of these items could be accessed in the Control Panel):
  • WMC (not all versions of Windows had it)
  • DVD code
  • Aero
  • Flip 3D
  • Windows Classic Theme
  • Windows Desktop Gadgets
  • Details and Preview panes cannot be enabled simultaneously
  • Built-in Games

The "Kill Ads" code is MS code in Windows and MS ...

If W8 was "W7 +SP2", businesses would be installing it, instead of W7 or "W7 + SP1".

8 was consumer focused

MS now has the consumer in it's sights for monetisation. If they can pull it off, they may end up getting in ten times the cash, or more - from the consumer of course, one way or another.
