For those MSE fans ... Beta program! :)

New Microsoft Security Essentials beta inbound - Neowin.net

It looks like Microsoft is getting close to releasing a new version of Microsoft Security Essentials, as some Microsoft Connect participants are being invited to join a new Microsoft Security Essentials Public Beta program. Microsoft vaguely state that the newest MSE beta will have “the latest protection features”, and the beta program itself will “start soon” after you accept the invitation.

Hmmm, Win8 8102 DP Defender additions? ;)

I got my invite. Heck, I gotta stay up on this stuff but, in the meantime, on Win8 8102 DP, I'll keep running Defender.

On Win7, I'll stay with AVG ... for now ...

Win8 8102 DP Defender additions?

I guess. :)

Sadly I didnt get an invite :(

I think that will only work if you valid Live ID address has received an invitation. Worth a try though.

OK. I'll read the small print carefully, first.
Later. It states, clearly, that anyything received by invitation (That's this one!) is confidential for five years and not to be disclosed or reproduced to any third party.

Not much later:
By coincidence, after leaving this forum and returning to the desktop, I was greeted with an "Essentials" Beta update! I installed but cannot discern any differences in the interface, but I haven't yet checked any performance differences.

From the MSE Ongoing Beta forum -

"There are currently 3 Connect programs for Security Essentials:

1. Ongoing Beta - this is the program you have signed to in the past and it is a very important program for us. Users who are registered to this program will always get the latest version, whether it is a Beta or a final version. You will get the latest version through Microsoft Update so you don't have to manually download from Connect.

2. Public Beta from 2010 - this program was used for the public Beta in 2010 and was not closed properly. We are working on this issue.

3. New public Beta program - this is the program that we started promoting this week. We sent invitation mails to users that registered to the previous public Beta program (#2) and chose to receive invitations from Microsoft. Since some of the ongoing Beta (#1) users were also registered to the previous Beta program (#2) they got the invitation to join the new public Beta (#3)

Bottom line - if you are a member of the ongoing Beta program, you don't have to register to any other Beta program. You will always get the latest Beta version through Microsoft Update."

To get that link I clicked on the first invitation link then clicked on the "Microsoft Security Essentials Beta Home" link on the left side and it gave me that link saying (basically): "If you would like to join the Microsoft Security Essentials public beta program please click the below link:"

So that link might not work but it should. If not then try my method!

I do have a Windows Live email address pretty much just for this.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what they implement in the full blown version. I get the kaspersky that I use in Windows 7 for free but if Microsoft can better/equal it with a built in Internet security package in Windows 8 I will certainly consider using it as my main protection.

For those participating in the MSE Beta 3 program, it is now available for download.

Check your email.

Welcome to the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta program!

The Beta program has started!

You can now sign in and download the Beta from the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta website.

The Beta program is a fully functional antimalware app with ongoing updates to help protect your PC from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. In addition to ongoing virus and spyware definition updates, we’ll provide software updates to the Beta for download through Microsoft Update on a periodic basis. To have these updates installed automatically, you must be subscribed to Microsoft Update with preferences set to Automatically download and install new updates. Learn more about automatic updates through Microsoft Update.

During the Beta, you’ll receive additional emails from Microsoft inviting you to participate in optional surveys. These surveys provide us with important feedback that will help improve future versions of the product. Your participation makes a difference!

At the end of the Beta program, participants who are subscribed to automatic updates through Microsoft Update will be upgraded to the released version of Microsoft Security Essentials. Instructions for manually upgrading to the released version will be included in an email that you’ll receive at the end of the Beta period. Please note that to continue receiving technical support, you’ll need to upgrade or install the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials once it’s released.

Thanks again for participating in the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta program.
