A taste of Chrome OS in Windows 8.x

First things first. Google is not sneaking Chrome OS into Windows 8.x. With the right experimental version of the Chrome Web browser and right settings, it may look like it and act like it, but it's not Chrome OS.

What you're really seeing is a beta of the Chrome Web browser, Chrome 32, running on Windows 8.x. The coming together of two technical paths, one by Microsoft and other by Google, enables the Windows developer channel build of the Chrome Web browser to masquerade as Chrome OS.

On the Microsoft side, ever since Windows 8, Microsoft has been working on an immersive, plug-in-free Web browser experience that could only be used with the Modern user interface, aka Metro. The first of these was Internet 10 in Metro mode.

.....If you want to give it a try, here's how you do it. First download the developer build for Chrome 32. Then, install it in Windows 8 or 8.1. Next, make Chrome the default Windows 8 browser. To do this, first open Chrome, go to settings, and in the "Default browser" section, click Make Google Chrome my default browser. Next, click on the Chrome tile from the Windows 8 Metro Start screen. If you start it from any other place, such as the desktop, you'll be running the "ordinary" version of Chrome. You should then see a screen like the one above.....

Google Brings Chrome OS Right into Windows 8’s Metro UI

Unfortunately for adopters of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system, this pre-release build of Chrome is only working on x86 and x64 editions of Windows, so no Windows RT support is offered for the time being. There’s no information regarding a potential version of Chrome specifically designed for Microsoft’s tablet-oriented platform.

While the search giant’s strategy pretty much makes sense, as it wants to develop its own platform based on Windows 8, Microsoft needs to up the ante and release more improvements for its browser.

Internet Explorer will no longer be the exclusive browser option for Windows 8 users, as Mozilla, the company behind the top-notch Firefox app, is also developing its own version capable of running in the Modern environment.

Couldn't agree with you guys more.

I dislike Google with a passion. The only reason why I have a Gmail account is to backup my Droid because I dislike Vz backup services. Another blood-sucking corporation. One more month and my contract is up with them. I have my eye on a Lumia 1020 WP8. I'll find a small carrier for prepay service and it's adios to both of them for good!

As a trojan horse maneuver, this is just brilliance from Google, even if personally I really don't want to be tied to their services more than what's strictly necessary, mainly their search engine.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure these days Microsoft is regretting that they let Internet Explorer stagnate back in the day...

As much as I am not a fan of metro, and despite the fact that I have not tried chrome os, I am quite certain that I would not like it.

I'm ok with android on my phone... but wouldn't want it on my desktop, nor chrome, nor metro...

Thus the struggle....
Lol! I see you went so far as placing in your specs "Win8 Pro, Desktop Mode". That's not to put you down. Just an observation. It's just that it struck me funny that you don't want to "encourage" Modern/Metro in any way. I know you don't like it.

Struggle? I don't know what to say other than sometimes things in life get worse before they get better....

Have you dabbled in Linux distros? Perhaps those may give you some "true" enjoyment?

Yanno, it's not even so much that I don't like metro... more that I don't wanna see the desktop environment disappear. I don't really care what other people like to use, to each his own. Note also that I'm not opposed to change. Should they come along with something that is actually better than the current desktop, I would surely jump on it. Metro, however, ain't it.

Yea, dabbled a wee bit with the linux, but ever so slightly...

In 8.1 I run Firefox as the default. The killer feature it has that I like is the "Zoom Text Only" feature which has become very important to me in the last few years--I love being able shrink or enlarge page text without affecting the size or magnification of any of the images on the page. Few things look worse than enlarged/magnified bitmaps...;) The look of that really cheapens IE, imo. But if you want to zoom page images, too, like IE, you can do it simply by turning off "Zoom Text Only." Chrome is out of the question because it does not allow me to turn off Google Update--it's like malware--turn it off and delete it from start-up programs and the very next reboot it's back again. Google wants to run it whether I like it or not, so I don't run Chrome. Only way to turn off Google Update is to uninstall Chrome.

I gotta ask > How much did you dabble in the Modern/Metro Store apps or has it been awhile? Admittedly they kind of sucked at first, but with time they're coming along quite nice IMO. I use them frequently now.

If, and only if, they start to develop "production" apps as good as these "consumption" apps are coming along, then the desktop may disappear altogether. It will take some years I'm sure. It may be that MS is writing a Modern/Metro version of Office. One would think they would start there and add others as time goes on.

There are some production apps. Mostly for artists such as painting, photos, etc. I would consider the Email, People, and Calendar apps to be half and half so far as communications.

I said it before I will say it again
Chrome is a piece of garbage. It is proven daily.
Crashes, incompatibilities, breaking parts of Windows and IE.
Sorry, Google go ride their Chrome piece of garbage all the way to the trash heap.

Not to mention the very fact they have purposely broken some of their stuff, such as youtube and others to not work with windows devices.
and they openly admit it?

Seems to me, i recall not too many years ago, MS got reamed for doing something similar.
Gotta love them double standards so many love to ignore.

Whatever, google can die the same horrible death that AOL did
