Windows 7 outpacing Windows 8 adoption, shows latest fig.

Latest NetMarketshare figures suggest Windows 7 is outpacing Windows 8's adoption, despite a rapid reduction in Windows XP usage over the past quarter.
Over the past month, Windows 8's share has increased by 0.61 percentage points, rising to 8.02 percent of the total share. Whereas, on the other hand, Windows 7's share increased by 0.8 percentage points, rising to 46.3 percent of the market.
To put this into context, Apple's latest desktop operating system OS X 10.8 operating system grew by 0.27 percentage points to a mere 3.7 percent of the overall share. But this figure accounts for just shy of half of Windows 8's overall growth for August.

Windows 8 is finished. MS is hoping for better things with 8.1. Problem is 8.1 is basically the same with a bit of camouflage. Time will tell if the consumers will fall for it.

I don't know how you folks felt the first time you clicked on the "Start" button in Windows 8.1, but I was extremely disappointed.

To me, the addition of the faux Start button was Microsoft "Thumbing their nose" (or some other appropriate gesture) at the Desktop users. It was probably done only to make it easier for touchscreen users to get to the Start screen.

They basically did everyone a disservice by calling it a Start Button. It's just the Windows key on your taskbar. Granted it does have more functionality than the key on the keyboard as you can't right click the keyboard Windows key, but I still think calling it a Start Button was a bad idea.

I already knew long before I saw it that it wouldn't open the traditional start menu so I wasn't surprised. I hardly ever use it, I just press the Windows key on my keyboard. Or press the forward button on my trackball that I reassigned to be the Windows key.

Interesting comment posted to the zdnet article:

Remember Windows Mobile? It was a phone, but it had a desktop interface. You'd have to use a stylus pen to hit the microscopic icons.

With Windows 8, it's happened again, but this time the other way 'round. Microsoft put its phone interface on a desktop computer. Again it has failed.

MS ultimate aim is to control the users. When/if it gets to the stage users have tiny devices and everything is online, they will have achieved that. Good for the Tech corps, not good for the users.

There will be steps along the way, little by little, so as not to alarm the consumers.

Seems MS think one of the steps will be to move the users onto "hybrid" devices. Those are basically small laptops which can also run "apps".

We shall see.

I don't think Microsoft is trying to push users to hybrid devices. They are already moving that way, Microsoft just wants a piece of the pie. Desktop PC's will be around for a while, it's just that most people already have one and aren't in a big hurry to buy another one or replace it. A fair number already have a laptop too, and a smart phone. Tablets are what's selling at the moment, at least it looks that way to me. Microsoft wants in on that market and tried to mold Windows to run on those devices. Trying to make Windows run on all types of devices doesn't seem to have worked out to well. A lot of die hard desktop users aren't impressed. Windows 7 is what rocks for those die hard users. I still run it on one of my desktop PC's. I respect those users and their opinion. Some may be buying Windows 7 licenses while they still can knowing that its going to get harder and harder to find.

I was quit indifferent to Windows 8 when I first started using it. After using it for a while though I don't find it so bad. I don't miss the old start menu. I still think it should be an option for those that want it though. Now that Metro is multi monitor friendly in 8.1 I have it running on my main desktop. I must say though, that if I didn't have TechNet I'd still be running Windows 7 on everything except my Laptop that came with Windows 8.

I notice no appreciable change in either "Other" (ie Linux, Chromebook, etc..) or MacOSX... so I guess all those people that said they were going to Linux or Chrombook were not truthful.

I'm guessing the loss in XP was mainly people going to tablets.

Thing is although many are claiming that the increasing numbers of tablet users will ease the pain of losing or offending traditional users, the overwhelming majority of loyal Windows users are PC oriented and doing this outrages and angers those loyal customers, which in turn are driving them to look at other OS.

Keep poking your best customers in the eye M$, see where it gets you. The outright obnoxiousness of the actions by the company are some of the most offensive I have seen in memory at any company. It really is astonishing.

Windows Lost Market Share

I notice no appreciable change in either "Other" (ie Linux, Chromebook, etc..) or MacOSX... so I guess all those people that said they were going to Linux or Chrombook were not truthful.

That is not what the chart shows.

"Other" increased by more than "W8" (i.e. it had the 2nd largest increase after "Windows 7").

Market Share OS (2013-10-01) bar.png

Overall, Windows operating systems lost Desktop OS market share (almost 1%) to "OS X" and "Other".

Hi there
Some of these stats should be provided with COMMENTARY as well -- of course if you think about it for even a weeny teeny microsecond with 0.75 of a SINGLE brain synapse the reason is OBVIOUS.

Very few corporations are going to W8 -- certainly not now that W8.1 is in place - they aren't going to do TWO upgrades one straight after the other - and in any case W8.1 isn't even "Officially" released yet (Oct 2 2013 from where I'm sitting).

Naturally they will be getting rid of the 100,000's of XP systems out there where still possible -- so W7 is the logical upgrade - stable, proved, for desktops (which is the normal environment for workplaces) w7 is still very much fit for purpose and will be around until at least 2020 - assuming your hardware lasts that long.

This in NO way has anything to do with whether W8.1 is a dog or not - it's just straight basic FACTS - and I'd assume if you were in charge of I.T services having to upgrade a company's infrastructure and systems what would you chose -- it's a NO BRAINER - especially if your company runs back end systems as well like SAP ERP systems or large ORACLE DB's - or even some bespoke software or old payroll types of applications which have already worked on W7 without going through the whole testing exercise again - and testing something like an ERP system with 1000's of users (or more) is NOT A TRIVIAL EXERCISE - upgrading one of these systems can take a few years too.

While new users are buying more tables and other devices (phones etc) running things like Android etc, they are also buying LESS windows PC's - but the corporate need for a Windows OS is still HUGE - even if they aren't buying new hardware yet - most large companies now prefer company laptops rather than fixed desk PC's but these will have W7 installed on them generally.

Statistics can pretty well prove anything you want them too - but this one is "so bleedin obvious.."

'Nuf said.

Cheers
jimbo

Agreed.
That is the logical explanation for those figures.

Also, the chart would be more useful if it had "Windows Other" and "OS X Other", instead of lumping those under "Others".

Well said, and it's what I've been saying for a while about tablets being the main reason Microsoft is moving towards this type of OS. Yeah, they do want, and need to be part of the mobile market.

As for Windows 8, now 8.1, I'm running it on my laptop and have gotten used to the way it works. No issues here, and to me, the OS performs just as good as 7, and some things are a bit better example task manager and windows explorer.

I'm still running 7 on my desktop but am seriously considering replacing it with 8.1. The only question is game compatibility.

Great post Jimbo.

Another factor that must be included when interpreting these figures is the economical crisis. People just don't have the money anymore to buy a new pc every five years or so. A lot of my friends and people around me are still using 7-10 year old pc's running Windows XP. Not that they like it...but they don't have the money to go and buy a new pc.

So, I guess it comes to the advice that I give my clients everyday ==> "Don't read the numbers exactly as they are printed, but always interpret them!"

In my opinion Windows 8 is still a great OS in the Windows family, if not the greatest yet!
