Microsoft is sole Windows RT tablet vendor as Dell's XPS 1

IDG News Service - Dell's XPS 10 tablet models with Windows RT have been removed from the company's website, which analysts said could leave Microsoft as the only vendor selling ARM-based tablets running versions of Windows RT.

The XPS 10 Web page lists models of the tablet as being "unavailable," and points users to the Latitude 10 tablet, which runs Windows 8 and has an Intel Atom processor. Microsoft, which sells Surface RT, is now the only device maker selling a tablet with Windows RT.

Not too surprising. It doesn't offer much to the oems. I suppose Dell might do one - in recognition of the $2bn input he received from MS.

Hi there
If I were running "another type of service" supplying "Ladies (or Men) of the night" RT might stand for "Rough Trade" with an A.Y.O.R label (At your own Risk !!!).

Seems to me that RT is going NOWHERE. Nobody really wants or needs a fully blown office suite on a 7 inch device and if you use larger ones why not install the PROPER WINDOWS apps -- processors are more than sufficient these days even for tablet size devices to install Windows apps.

I really can't see RT lasting the distance -- there is ZERO advantage over a small ANDROID device -- even the UK TESCO supermarket chain is going to start selling its own 7 inch Android powered tablets in October for 110 GBP or so (around 160 USD / 120 EUR).

In any case what young aspiring developer is going to want to develop an OS or APPS that are only going to be used by about 74 people and 3 dogs -- hardly a "Career enhancing move" for aspiring developers I would have thought.

I think in any case the whole idea of 7 inch devices as a total waste of time anyway -- I've got a lovely Samsung S4 phone which is good enough for any of the stuff I might use a 7 inch tablet for and it's just about the largest screen size that makes it useful as a phone without becoming a ridiculous phablet. For other "proper" work I use a nice 14 inch THIN ultra book which can easily be connected to a HUGE monitor when at work or home and has all the facilities of a PROPER computer.

Ms should really have concentrated on their Surface PRO and modelled it on say a CONVERTIBLE rather than a pure tablet -- there is actually a market out there for PROPER / DECENT CONVERTIBLES- but none of the models I've seen out there yet enthuse me at all -- the Lenovo had possibilities but getting the screen on and off is really fiddly.

A convertible would have kept Ms in the game - and Windows too !! - it's still not too late for Ms to do this - they could easily subcontract the hardware out to say ASUS or ACER, and re-badge it with the Ms logo.

Cheers
jimbo

[h=1]Dell May Not Be Dumping Windows RT After All[/h]
As I’ve reported to you yesterday, Dell abandoned the XPS 10 tablet, making everyone out there believe that it’s no longer interested in Windows RT and it prefers to stick to the full-featured Windows 8.

It turns out that Dell isn’t willing to give up Windows RT so fast, as recently leaked information indicates that a new device running Microsoft’s tablet-oriented OS might be on its way to the market.

[h=1]Dell gives up on Windows RT[/h]
NEW YORK -- Microsoft's Windows RT operating system just lost another proponent. Neil Hand, head of tablets at Dell, on Wednesday said his company won't be releasing a new Windows RT device to follow up its product from a year ago.
"We are not planning to refesh our current line of RT products," Hand said at a Dell tablet and PC launch event here. "We're really focused on full Windows products...The full Windows experience provides great capability."

Well, that's disappointing. There was news that Dell had 3 new ARM based devices in the works.

It means Microsoft has more work to do on their branding and marketing for RT to convince people to buy it when it makes sense for them (And there are many people who it does make sense for. There is more reason to buy a Surface RT or other RT tablet with keyboard than most Chromebooks, yet lots of people buy Chromebooks).

I think that RT and Surface PRO would have done better if Metro only was installed only on them and users were not exposed to Metro on the desktop. Windows 8 was badmouthed before the surfaces were sold and word of mouth killed them along with M$ marketing.

I'm not surprised at all. I said this a while back that Windows RT was gonna fail no matter how you look at it. There are no supporters, Windows RT tablets cost almost the same as full Windows 8 tablets, and there is nothing special about Windows RT. Well at least Windows RT won't be alone. It will join the same fate as Zune :).

You do realize that Zune was neither a failure, nor did it die. Zune became Windows Phone 7.x, and was essentially the predecessor to Windows 8.

RT isn't dead either, since the Surface 2 is about to be released. Microsoft just has more work to do before third party vendors are going to push it. Microsoft won't be giving up on this.

Yep kinda like this story.

Microsoft keeps praising its new Surface tablets even though they’re not yet available, but the company claims that the success they’re recording so far is amazing.

In fact, the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 are selling “like veritable hotcakes,” Microsoft said and yes, the company really used these words.

“Bearing in mind the limited availability, you may want to pre-order now to ensure you get the products you want when they become available on Oct. 22,” it added.

Microsoft

Hasn't Microsoft always exaggerated in their demand of products? I mean didn't they say a lot of people were going out and upgrading to Windows 8, and well that doesn't seem true just by looking at the marketshare. Maybe they're selling like hotcakes because they made a small amount of Surface tablets? I don't trust everything that Microsoft says.

And I also noticed that Microsoft picks bad dates to being selling their Surface. I mean if Apple introduces new revisions of iPad this October, it will inevitably eclipse the Surface just like last year. Everyone in the industry will talk about Apple. I don't know how Apple achieves this but they can sell huge quantities no matter what product they throw out to consumers.

If Microsoft comes out with something revolutionary, then they have a chance. But they are just following the footsteps of everyone else. If I hear them say that their gonna release watches, glasses and mini Surfaces, then its a big facepalm. Geez.

Microsoft Surface selling out? We've seen this movie before

Microsoft says its Surface tablets are close to selling out. Hmm...Time for a reality check.

First, a mea culpa. I wrote a story or two last year about Surface selling out. While technically accurate, it belied the catastrophe in the making for the first-generation Surface RT.
And here we go again. "It...looks like pre-order stock of the Surface 2 (64GB) and Surface Pro 2 (256 GB and 512GB) are close to selling out," Microsoft said in its official Surface blog on Wednesday.

well .. this is another blow to Win RT that is already running low in popularity graph and one of the major causes along with the Win 8 letting its revenues slide down with a steady rate
