A deeper dive into Windows 8: can Microsoft's big bet pay off?

Summary: Windows 8 is, without a doubt, the most controversial Windows version the company has ever designed. After a month of using and dissecting the Windows Developer Preview, I offer a deeper look at what’s inside and some predictions about what you can expect in the future.

Microsoft released its first preliminary version of Windows 8 roughly a month ago. It’s somewhat raw, definitely incomplete, and absolutely the most controversial Windows version the company has ever considered releasing.

I will bet all my pips on when Windows 8 RTM release it will be very different to this DP, which points heavily to being a tablet/smart phone OS. :p

I'll raise you a few pips (I can do that) but, prior, please specify what you mean as "very different," aem, as I see the DP as more a hybrid than anything else - and a good one at that. ;)

Aem, if the UI is going when the final comes out what's the whole point in upgrading to windows 8?

Software evolution my friend, it's all about having the latest but might not be the greatest we'll just have to wait and see.

Aye, it will be interesting to see the outcome of this OS, but I really hope x86-64 stays around. I'm keeping my older devices as long as I can.

I'm just not ready to trust the tablet market yet.

And when did aem lose his bet?

MS isn't going to ditch Metro for non-tablets, they're just tweaking it. If they wanted to scrap Metro they would have done so long before the DP. The whole point of 8 is integration. You can't tell everyone now - ah, forget it. We're talking about the most significant OS change in years from the biggest OS producer on the planet. The point of no return passed long ago.

It's reminds me when the "Dock" came out for Mac. No one liked it and not no one can live without it. All it takes is a little time.
