Office 365 outage Thursday night

Any major cloud service outage is bad, but good communications can make it less stressful. Microsoft did OK with last night's Exchange Online outage.

My personal domain is run on Office 365. I've generally been very happy with it, but last night was one of those times that makes for unhappy customers: a major outage.

Late in the evening email just stopped working. Multiple computers and devices on different networks were all timing out on Exchange Activesync access so it seemed pretty clearly to be the service. I also couldn't log into the Office 365 web portal.

At this point, my first thought was to check the Office 365 Twitter feed; surely Microsoft would post notice of a major outage there. But there was no sign of anything wrong, so I asked.

The Office Twitter folks seemed to know nothing about it, but another user told me there was a "major outage". At this point I thought to check the service status page for my account. Below are the content for the full incident last night. When I first checked, only the bottom 2 or 3 statuses were up
.

It was a short outage in my case. Office 365 is the best thing, from an IT perspective, to happen to my small business. Having video conferencing, file access/editing, email access, and client data anywhere, anytime, on any device has improve business operations and productivity.

Ok, perhaps there are some uses to some people... but wouldn't you have all that anyway on your laptop without the risk of 'downtime'...

The point is, that you can use Office-on-demand on a strangers Computer, without installing something on it, plus you can access all your files in the cloud via sky-drive.

I think, that Office 365 is quite handy AND affordable.

Ok, but a) how often would ya really need to use a 'friend's computer to do that, and b) wouldn't the cost of cloud storage offset any office app savings...??

What people have a tendency to not see is by using some form of cloud service a copr/company can cut down on the amount of server blades needed (cost cutting), also what is the difference if a company is headquartered in Seattle with offices through out the world and those offices have to access the company's servers in Seattle. In reality none. The main servers for that company are actually a cloud service to the satellite offices .
Hope this makes sense, I am getting over another Minnie stroke (been two weeks, and just starting to see some light in that damn tunnel. . .:D, ain't life fun. . .:D

I would say that the cloud service should be still cheaper, as running your own server's. If you have your own server's, then you need minimum an administrator for it on top. So you have the hardware-part + wages etc., but I'm not saying, that cloud services are suitable for everyone.

@Lee;

I completely agree with you.

Seems this idiotic service has been acting up a lot - last couple of days I've had issues uploading office docs. Constantly getting can't upload file notices

Upload Center issues.JPG

BTW this happens on both my desktop (W7) and my laptop (W8) with all sorts of Office 365 files so I doubt the issue is at my end.

BTW this happens on both my desktop (W7) and my laptop (W8) with all sorts of Office 365 files so I doubt the issue is at my end.

. . .it still makes one wonder. . .:what:

Depends.. are you using a third party firewall? A lot of times those can interfere with services like this. I've had problems with firewalls interfering with DropBox as well.
