Windows 8 Upgrades May Render Some DRM-Protected Content Unusable
The upgrade process from an existing installation of Windows to the public pre-Beta of Windows 8 released at BUILD can alter the data associated with copyright protected content to the point in which it’s rendered unusable.
Microsoft has confirmed this problem, indicating that early adopters testing Windows 8 Developer Preview Build 8102 Milestone 3 (M3) can be impacted.

Windows 8 Dev Preview x64
Ah, so this is only really at the base software level. With programs like iTunes and game stores (Steam, Origin, etc.), it's possible to carry information over after re-downloading (or in the case of iTunes, de-authorize on the old computer and re-authorize on the new one).
However, I was under the impression that iTunes didn't have DRM on music any more?
This is what I read, iTunes Plus are DRM free. but " the songs are watermarked (viaSlashdot) with the email address of the iTunes account used to purchase them."
