Windows 8 Grabs 5.42% of the OS Market

Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system has managed to grab 5.42 percent of the OS market at the end of July, recent data from Net Applications unveils.

However, the operating system grew only 0.32 percentage points during the month, after enjoying a 0.83 percentage points increase in June.

According to a recent article on TNW, the June surge was mainly due to the release of Windows 8.1 Preview, which helped the platform gain 5.10 percent market share.

In July, however, its growth slowed down, though it was accompanied by a 0.13 percentage points increase in Windows 7 usage, which now accounts for 44.50 percent of the market.

Ever since its official release in October, Windows 8 has showed steady growth, though the July increase appears to be the smallest one until now.

Available only as a Preview version for the time being, Windows 8.1 should arrive on PCs in the not too distant future, offering some appealing new features when compared to Windows 8, and capable of attracting more users to it, that’s for sure.

This should help Windows 8 increase its share on the market, though it might still take a while before it will manage to take down already established platform iterations from Microsoft.
Windows 8 Grabs 5.42% of the OS Market

Hi there
"Grabs" is hardly IMO the correct expression -- might be desperately via brute force and lack of other possible choices grudgingly reaches 5.4% of the market. (For most people using Linux or Apple isn't an option -- and W7 has all but disappeared from normal retail channels).

"Grabs" essentially implies that the OS is taking retail by storm which even the most biased person can see quite clearly it most definitely isn't.

Windows 8.1 might fare a little better though provided they do something with that REDICULOUS start button. At least link that button to Power on / Off / restart /Logoff etc if nothing else.

Cheers

I think "Claws" would fit in much better. As far as the bend over button M$ needs to change it or remove it, will cause more harm than good. The M$ my way or the highway looks like most customers are taking the highway.

Overall, Microsoft’s operating system has lost market share in front of rivals in July, now accounting for 91.45 percent of the market. That translates into a 0.06 percentage points decrease from the 91.51 percent share it enjoyed in June.

Windows XP increased its market share too (despite Softpedia's claim to the contrary).

Even OS X 10.8 went up.

Vista and "Others" declined.

[h=1]Windows 8 adoption rate drops back to a plod[/h]
The 8.1 release will address criticisms about the usability of Windows 8 new tile-based interface, which some users of older Windows systems found confusing. The update will bring back the Start Button and make other UI tweaks, as well as introducing the ability to boot to the desktop and Internet Explorer 11.

I fail to see what any of this has to do with Apple or Linux. People who don't like 8 can easily stick with Windows 7. A lot of people like the OS they have evidence by the way XP is holding on, Windows 8 is a big change for a lot of people. Big change does not go over well in technology. That being said being at 5.4. "Grabs" might not be the best word, but 5.4 is not that far off from where they were headed at the growth rate 8 has been going at, even with that being slow. Maybe they're at 5.4 becuase more and more people are getting used to Windows 8 every day. Im sure many are liking what they see from 8.1 as well. This whole notion of "Windows 8 is not enough like 7, so I'm switching the Linux or Mac" makes very little sense to me. Despite its flaws, especially with the option of Desktop, Windows 8 is still more like the previous OS than Mac. I don't know anyone would expect that Windows 8 sales would just stop. Everyone does have the mentality that they're not even going to try to get used to Windows 8.

The only other option when Vista came out was XP. 8 is having to compete with both XP and 7, two OS that people really like. Plus, it's a bigger change from 7 to 8 than from XP to Vista. Plus as bad as the coverage of Vista was, it's worse with 8 and even at times overblown. Ofcourse for a while 8 is going to sell slowly. But as they continue to make improvements and people continue to get used to it, the share will increase. Plus, people are going to have to get off XP eventually.

Getting harder and harder for normal people to walk into a retail chain and find a Windows 7 machine. In addition, finding a Windows 7 retail OS install disc is becoming harder and harder.

Not sure if you are just over-optimistic or what but be that as it may, the fact that people prefer XP to Win8 speaks volumes..Vista was a blight as is Win8 ...so it's selling slowly..but given the amount of resources that went into Win8 do you really think shareholders have that much patience to wait for a return?..time is money and believe me they will cut their losses at the drop of a hat.

:roflmao:
They need to bring back F8 into safe boot as well in Windows 8.

The real tragedy is that the framework for Windows 8 IS VERY GOOD! All these idiots had to do when the public balked was to allow a choice of which GUI to boot into at start and all would have been well, my guess is that a good number who initially would stick with the desktop at boot default would have eventually switched over to Metro over time. Now we will never know.

I still can't believe what a FIASCO Windows 8 has become and it all could have EASILY been avoided. My guess is that in the future this will be a case studied in the best business schools in the country, just like the New Coke fiasco was. Except one company LISTENED and actually acted on that feedback and the other.....hasn't.

Everyone does have the mentality that they're not even going to try to get used to Windows 8.

This excuse is trotted out regularly.
It doesn't take into account the people who used all of the W8 previews for a year before the retail version was released and who still hate Metro.

How long is this "miraculous revelation" going to take?

This is also true with regards to the awful "Ribbon" too
I read an article on another computer blog (within the past week) where several comments were posted about how the writers hated the "Ribbon".
The posters considered the "Ribbon" and Metro to be failed GUIs.

Hasn't the "Ribbon" been foisted onto users for ~6 years now?

Yeah, I concur entirely...I have seen quite a number of people that have used Windows 8 and just given up due to the poor user experience... it's human nature to try anything new, anyway - so the excuse that people are not willing to try the OS is just not true...

Hi there
Windows 8.1 is DEFINITELY an improvement -- had windows 8 had just BOOT DIRECT TO DESKTOP from the start like W8.1 has most of the complaints over Metro and lack of menu would have disappeared and there wouldn't be a huge amount of negative publicity.

I think somebody looked at the Apple Store and thought -- Maybe we can do this too without realizing that Windows users come from a totally different perspective than Apple users.

I still have some issues with Windows 8.1 --it's not quite ready IMO for prime time - but it IS a preview so changes will certainly be made before the Final.

Windows 8 itself wasn't obviously sensibly thought out -- Windows 8.1 is definitely a step in the right direction -- lets hope Ms realizes that there are MILLIONS of "Classical PC" users out there who aren't going away any time soon.

Also with people buying SEVERAL larger and larger monitors (60 inch one's aren't that rare any more - or even 72 inch monsters) the whole idea of running full screen Mobile phone type apps on these is just PLAIN BONKERS. Even I regularly use 3 or 4 monitors at home now and usually have at least TWO at work --generally THREE.

There are signs that with the use of these monitors desktop computing is making a small comeback -- it will never be as great as before --those days are gone but it is still a SIGNIFICANT and not a dying market.

Cheers
jimbo
