Win 8. Zero-Power Optical Disk Drive, What Is It?

With the focus lying heavily on optimization for low screen resolutions, touch devices and mobile devices in general, Microsoft had to find ways to optimize the operating system’s power consumption and saving features. During the introduction of the Windows 8 developer preview Microsoft did not really reveal that many information about battery life, power consumption and new power saving options that the company build into the operating system.

It has to be noted though that the feature is only available if the computer supports SATA 6GB/s. If it does not, Windows cannot make use of the feature to reduce the power consumption of the operating system.

I just don't see why it would only be enabled for 6GB/s drives... that doesn't make any sense. I don't know of any portable computer that has those.
And sure, my desktop has a few of those ports but, really? Don't the ones with faster transfer rates get the transfer done faster anyway, so they can go to idle in a shorter amount of time?

I suspect it's a long-range plan. Sata III will be the inevitable default in time. It makes sense to introduce it now.

That does make sense, but for this iteration, wouldn't it make sense to include Sata II as well? I mean, it can't logistically be that difficult can it?
