Steve Ballmer confesses Microsoft built too many tablets

Steve Ballmer has belatedly and half-heartedly admitted that Microsoft built far more Surface tablets than the company could possibly sell. And at the same internal Microsoft town hall meeting, he also said the obvious: Microsoft isn't selling as many copies of Windows 8 as it hoped.
It's good that Ballmer has owned up that Microsoft has trouble when it comes to the Surface and Windows 8, albeit in a small, semi-private way. More important now, though, is some sense of how he's going to fix the problem, and in a public way, not semi-privately. People's attitudes towards a product or technology tend to harden over time. The longer that Windows 8 and Surface tablets are seen to be troubled with no solution in sight, the harder it will become for any fix to work.

Wake up call!... M$ have for too long lived in their own little world - thinking they can create a totally new OS and customers will just accept it... manufacturing gazillions of tablets thinking there will be such a great demand? ...times they are a changing - lets see if they can sway with the ill winds that are blowing or if they will stand tall and be uprooted...

Hi everyone...

I love all the comments by the way :)

Keep this close to your chest if Microsoft windows devision don't turn it around with the brand new build of Windows 9 that FYI is now on Rush or ASAP status and will be rolling out next year in the fall of 2014.

You/We all can kiss Microsoft goodbye in regards to Microsofts OS devision and by 2015 to 2016 Microsoft will be slowly dieing right out of the picture in the next 3 to 5 years...

This is now in the hands in how Windows 9 does peroid

There is lots of stress and lots of folks leaving by the hundreds on their own and by Microsofts choice... These cuts are to save costs...

The folks who believe Microsoft has all this coin behind them and so on better think again...Windows 8 and this SP1 for Windows 8 what Microsoft is calling Windows 8.1 has cost the company billions and still counting and believe me this windows 8 mistake really cost Microsoft lots of money and lots of heart aches.

Microsoft owes lots of coin to partners within the IT world and some of these groups and companies have not been paid by Microsoft for months and some for over a year.

If Microsoft don't get it together with Windows 9 rest assure Microsoft will be in the same ship like BlackBerry is heading and that's down and out at least that's BlackBerry's fate in 2014.

Microsoft made tons of coin made billions and the people on the top got their share and others and ran off and I really do believe that this could also be the end for Microsoft in the very very near future again if they don't step to the plate and do the right thing...

Hi there
C'mon -- a company needs to try out different things --even if some of them are 100% B/S.

Too many tablets -- sounds like a complaint a contemporary of W.A Mozart made about one of Mozart's compositions -- "Too many Notes" . !!! (Salieri -- who remembers ANY of his music these days --whereas Mozart is still a top seller in Classical music concerts and Operas around the world).

Sometimes if stuff doesn't work you do something else. Eventually if your budget, market research and developers are OK you'll get it right.

Ms isn't going bust any time soon. And before people say that Ms stocks took a huge hit last week -- this ALWAYS happens in market trading -- experienced traders NEVER trade in the week dividends or earnings are posted - basic 101 in Market trading. Stocks have since recovered quite decently BTW. Ms do a LOT LOT more than just windows now.

Problem is though when people DO get kicked out of top jobs for FAILING - they walk away with almost obscene Telephone figure amounts of money as "Bonuses and compensations" !!!!!

Actually a good example of how people at the top get paid for doing NOTHING -- there's an organisation in London - who were responsible for the finances etc of London 2012 Olympic Games -- now this is a fixed event so you would have thought that these people would be on Temporary contracts until the Olympic Games finished or possibly for a few months more for winding down the processes say until mid 2013.

Since these are all "In Ministers pockets and HMG's cronies" they were all put on PERMANENT payrolls -- so now the affairs are being wound up they are going to receive MASSIVE amounts of compensation as "Redundancy payments" etc.

This isn't endemic to the UK -- I think PLANET WIDE a lot of government contracts are awarded like that -- while if you are a normal taxpayer who forgot to decare that 500 USD bonus you got for working an extra 80 hours a month ago they come down on you like a ton of bricks -- so in fact it would actually be better for Mr Ballmer to STAY --just be kicked upstairs to a non executive post where he can't do any more damage or receive a huge million dollar plus pension plus several million more as "compensation".

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jim,

Time will tell and lets wait and see what really happens this year and in 2014, as far as I am concerned and lots of folks who deal with Microsoft every day Monday through Friday every day, don't see Microsoft Corp in good shape and I have friends who are on Microsoft's payroll and been working there for over 15 to 20 years and trust me for the last 2 years Microsoft is treating and running the day to day operation like a sweatshop and these days there is not enough staff to answer all the phone calls and lots of department mergers... and some of these people who I know have said they will be lucky to still be around by Dec 2013.

I think with all this said, and if Microsoft don't get it together with the brand new Build of Windows 9 that will be rolling out next year and get rid of the MS Office 2013 closed code type of Office new future products, I think we will all see through the media by 2015 to 2017 that Microsoft will (DOA) just like RIM/BlackBerry within 2014/2015...

Jim, Microsoft isn't even paying their bills to their partners and some are over 6month to a year in the rears and behind...

Lets wait and see what will happen, and whatever will happen it wont drag on for years it will be quick and final in these very unstable financial time we live in, times have really changed in the last 15 to 20 years and there are really no more breaks or lots of time to turn things around like the old days... you screw up in anything in these days it can be over just like that and doesn't matter what Giant Name or how much you where worth yesterday... It all boils down to sales and is your company making and doing the right things to please the general mainstream and common user... (I think this is any companies bread and butter)

Example: even if Microsoft has lets say 1.5 Trillion Dollars to play with! (yes that's lots of coin but in 4 to 5 years that 1.5 Trillion gets less and less like anything else)

Microsoft owes and has a very big payroll and lots of expenses like every Corporation has to pay yearly/monthly to keep alive, and the word is at this time Microsoft is losing big time these days and last few years, and its really starting to hurt Microsoft and I think its a good thing and so do many other and smarter people who work on Wall Street, and Bay Street...

Like I Said lets wait and see what will happen, non of us really are there and really know what is and what isn't going down within Microsoft...

The winners are here are: Mr Gates, Mr Allen, and a few others who will never have to worry about anything in this lifetime...

Reality BYTES the big one :(

I get email from Staples.

The subject line in today's mail was as follows: "It has arrived!"

So I opened it and then clicked on 'SHOP'.
I guess they already sold out their allotment of ??? 100,000 ???

Hey, though reality bites, you just HAVE to keep dreaming.
Not all dreams will come true, but if Jobs hadn't dreamt up that silly
"Apple Walkman" way back when, they'd probably be out of business by now.

Thanks for the heads up ACR731,

I will leave it at this time, this could also touch on a little of Microsoft's current customer base in regards to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ;)

Thanks for the update...

Hi there
Loads of people if they've worked in the same business for a long time often feel "The business is going nowhere" or "It's changed a lot since I started in it and not always for the better".

The whole nature of work has essentially changed and unless you are in a job like say a Clergyman, the Police, Fire services or even a successful Lawyer then perhaps a CHANGE is good -- since who ever really works for a typical business for the whole of their working lives. A lot of people would actually BENEFIT by possibly doing a career change -- in most Western countries it's not abnormal for people to live well into their 80's and even 90's and today's 65's are often much fitter than the 55's of even 20 years ago. I'm getting on and can STILL run a Marathon (42.2 KM) in just about 4 hrs dead.

(The current Archbishop of Canterbury - head of the C.of E or Episcopal church as it's known in the US was originally an OIL executive -- and he's doing very well having a go at "Payday Loan" companies who are essentially legalized loan sharks charging around 5,000 % (yes FIVE THOUSAND %) APR by tempting POOR people into short term loans).

Archbishop of Canterbury declares war on Wonga: 'We'll put you out of business' | Mail Online

Shows that a change of Career can be a good thing. !!!

I started off in Engineering, did a load of I.T and now do essentially some Market Trading and a few Pro Photography Gigs -- all these types of jobs I've really on the whole enjoyed myself in but would I have stayed in ANY of them for 30 - 40 years -- No I don't think so. I still do the odd I.T gig but I'm essentially "Semi-retired" now - but am busier and probably enjoying myself far more than when I was in Full time work. !!!

We need to look at OURSELVES a bit more rather than expect a corporation like MS to stay essentially the same for over half a century -- even the British Monarchy has changed considerably over that period -- and I for one certainly wouldn't like the equivalent of QEII's job. !!!

I still don't think Ms is a bad organisation and there's lots of innovative life left in it yet -- even allowing for the W8 fiasco.

As for Ms not paying suppliers for up to 6 months -- this used to be the NORM in a lot of businesses --180 day billing cycle was quite common -- even if you were a tiny "Under the Railway Arches" business or "Sids Café" across the street supplying Sandwiches.
One of the worst offenders -- and I know as I've seen plenty of external contractors constantly ringing them up as to when they can expect to get paid - was Accenture (more popularly known as "Accidenture" !!). Sometimes people weren't paid for nearly 9 months. !!! However the Law ( in the EU / EEA) has now been changed so they do have to pay their externals quickly now.

In the EU / EEA rules have been changed that suppliers must now be paid within 30 days at the latest and before accepting any contract it's very easy to get a FREE instantaneous brief online credit status of the organisation in question so your risk as an independent free lancer or supplier is significantly minimized.

Cheers

Don't know what the appeal is for the nexus devices. I've used many devices across 3 platforms (iOS, android, and RT/8). No BB, though. I still think RT feels much much much better than iOS and android. There's just no comparison.
